Transfer Students: Immigration Information

Transferring Your SEVIS Record

As a newly admitted international student to Ohio University in F-1 or J-1 status with an active SEVIS record you may require an electronic SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) transfer prior to enrolling at Ohio University.

Step 1:  Be admitted by Ohio University.

Step 2: Notify your current institution that you wish to transfer your SEVIS record.

They will most likely have paperwork for you to begin the process.  If you have not already informed the Office of Undergraduate International Admissions or the Graduate College of Ohio University about your desire to transfer to Ohio University, please contact them as well.

Step 3:  Provide required documents to Ohio University.

You will be notified of these requirements by your admitting office.

Step 4:  Receive your Ohio University I-20 or DS-2019 form.

Tips

  • It is recommended that you do not leave your current school until you are certain that all of the documentation that has to be completed by you and your international student advisor is complete and submitted to Ohio University.
  • Be sure to provide either your current mailing address or specify that you will be picking your immigration document up when you arrive at Ohio University.
  • If you are planning to leave the United States prior to receiving your immigration document, please communicate this intent as early as possible.  You will need to have your new Ohio University I-20 or DS-2019 in order to return to the US.
  • All students transferring to Ohio University are required to attend the International Student Orientation that precedes the starting semester.  Please plan your return flights accordingly.
