Support Resources

Everyone's needs are different, and there is no right or wrong way to seek support after experiencing sexual misconduct. Whether you are looking for confidential support, medical care, advocacy, reporting assistance, counseling, or other help, a variety of resources are available both through Ohio University and through community services. The links below provide information about confidential and non-confidential resources available on the Athens campus, in the Athens community, and to students enrolled through OHIO’s regional campuses, OHIO online, and the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (HCOM).

Understanding Confidentiality

Confidential resources generally are not required to report information to Civil Rights Compliance or law enforcement. However, confidentiality may have limits in certain circumstances, such as an imminent risk of serious harm, suspected abuse or neglect of a minor, or when disclosure is otherwise required by law or court order.

Non-confidential resources may have reporting obligations. While they generally protect the privacy of reports and those involved, they may be required to share information with Civil Rights Compliance or, in some circumstances, law enforcement. Information is typically shared only with those who have a legitimate need to know in order to provide support, respond to reports, comply with Title IX regulations, meet other requirements of University policy or law, or as otherwise permitted by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Confidential Resources on the Athens Campus

  • Survivor Advocacy Program (SAP)

    The Survivor Advocacy Program provides confidential support and advocacy services to students who have been impacted by sexual assault, sexual harassment, dating and domestic violence, and stalking, regardless of where or when the incident occurred. SAP Advocates work to increase students’ access to support and resources. Students are never expected to disclose details they aren’t ready to share.

  • Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS)

    Counseling and Psychological Services offers mental health services, resources, education, and programming for currently enrolled undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Students who are not experiencing an emergency or crisis that requires an immediate response may schedule an appointment or speak to a counselor during drop-in hours.

    Campus Care provides Urgent Care and Primary Care services, including gynecological care and STI testing, to students on the Athens campus, and will refer students to external specialists when needed. (Note: Campus Care does not conduct forensic examinations to collect evidence. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners are available at O’Bleness Hospital.)

    Other off-campus resources that are generally confidential include licensed professional counselors and other healthcare providers, rape crisis counselors, domestic violence advocates, clergy or chaplains, attorneys, and certain local, state, and nonprofit assistance agencies. Individuals with questions about confidentiality should ask the resource provider to explain any limits before sharing information.

    Civil Rights Compliance is the office of the Title IX Coordinator, who is responsible for monitoring and overseeing the University’s compliance with all Title IX obligations, including management of the Sexual Harassment and Other Sexual Misconduct Grievance Process. CRC also coordinates supportive measures designed to restore or preserve equal access to classes, employment, housing, involvement, and more.

  • Ohio University Police Department (OUPD)

    OUPD investigates allegations of sexual misconduct that occur on the Athens campus and constitute violations of criminal law. Officers are trained in crisis intervention and sexual assault investigation and will work to ensure the well-being of individuals who make reports, including assisting them with accessing health care and support services.

Some resources available through the Athens campus also provide services to students enrolled through OHIO’s regional campuses, OHIO Online, and the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (HCOM) at the Dublin or Cleveland campuses.     Counseling and Psychological Services utilizes BetterMynd, an online therapy platform, to provide confidential mental health services at no cost to eligible students enrolled through OHIO’s regional campuses, OHIO Online, or the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (HCOM) at the Dublin and Cleveland campuses, as well as HCOM third- and fourth-year students.

    Eligible students who join BetterMynd have access to a 24/7 crisis support line, six live video counseling sessions per year, and unlimited access to more than 20 live psychoeducational group sessions offered each month. Eligibility information and instructions for accessing BetterMynd are available through the Counseling and Psychological Services website, along with numerous online and self-help resources.
