Why did you choose OHIO Chillicothe?
I chose OHIO Chillicothe because it offered more than convenience -- it allowed me to achieve a goal I had carried for years. As an adult learner, returning to school was both challenging and rewarding, and the support and community here made all the difference. This journey has shown me that it is never too late to grow, succeed, and chase a dream.
What was your ah-ha moment at OHIO Chillicothe - that point where you said to yourself, “I’ve got this?
My first ah-ha moment came during my field placement while doing an assessment with my first patient family in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). That was the moment everything felt real. I realized I wasn't just learning social work in the classroom -- I was living it. In that moment, I knew I belonged here, not just as a student, but in this profession. After returning to school later in life and pushing through doubts, that moment gave me the confidence to say, "I've got this."
Who were your favorite professors, and how did they make an impact on your life?
My favorite professors have been my social work professors because they truly care about me, not just as a student, but as a person. Returning to school later in life came with challenges, and their patience, encouragement, and support meant everything to me. They helped me navigate difficult times, talk through struggles, and find my footing while staying focused on my future. They supported me both personally and professionally, teaching me so much about social work while also helping me grow in confidence and believe in myself. Their guidance and belief in me made a lasting impact, and they have helped shape not only the kind of social worker I hope to become but also reinforced through this journey that perseverance and believing in yourself can carry you farther than you imagine.
What was the hardest hill you had to climb at OHIO Chillicothe? And how did you overcome challenges you faced?
One of the hardest hills I had to climb was completing my field practicum in a setting connected to the loss of my child. It brought back grief and self-doubt, and there were times I questioned whether I was strong enough to continue. At the same time, balancing full-time work, full-time school, and internship required tremendous sacrifice, long nights, and a lot of resilience. I overcame these obstacles by leaning into support, staying focused on why I started this journey, and trusting that my experiences could help me serve others. What once felt like one of my greatest challenges ultimately strengthened me and helped shape my calling to social work, showing me how personal pain can become compassion and purpose in serving others.
What are your favorite OHIO Chillicothe memories?
My favorite memories at OHIO Chillicothe have been the relationships and connections I built throughout this journey, especially with my social work cohort and professors. Of course, I'll remember milestones like overcoming challenges in the classroom, stepping into my field placement, and realizing I truly belonged in social work, but some of my favorite memories were the moments in between, the conversations, encouragement, and shared struggles that made the journey meaningful. Those are the moments that reminded me I wasn't doing this alone, and they made this experience so much more than earning a degree.
What’s the one thing you would tell a new OHIO Chillicothe student not to miss?
One thing I would tell a new student at OHIO Chillicothe not to miss is the relationships and support around you. Don't rush through the experience focused only on the end goal. Take time to build connections with classmates and professors, ask for support, and embrace opportunities to grow. Some of the most meaningful parts of my journey were the moments in between, and those connections made all the difference.
What are your next steps or plans for the future?
My next steps are to begin this next chapter as a social worker and use both my education and lived experiences to help others navigate difficult moments. I plan to obtain my LSW, pursue my master's degree, and continue growing in a profession that gives me purpose. This journey has strengthened my passion for serving others, and I look forward to continuing to grow, advocate, and make a meaningful difference. This degree is not the end of a journey for me, but the beginning of the work I feel called to do.
