Vinton G. Cerf

Vinton Cerf, Senior VP of Technology Strategy at MCI was the second recipient of the Strowger Award. Then director Trevor Roycroft presented Dr. Cerf the award after Cerf gave the School's keynote speech during Communication Week 2001 titled "The Internet: A 21st Century Tidal Wave."

Widely known as the "Father of the Internet," Cerf is the co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the Internet. In December 1997 President Clinton presented the U.S. National Medal of Technology to Cerf and his partner, Robert E. Kahn, for founding and developing the Internet.

As Senior VP at MCI, Cerf is responsible for helping to guide corporate strategy development from the technical perspective.

Cerf serves as chairman of the board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). He served as founding president of the Internet Society from 1992-1995. He served a term as chairman of the Board in 1999, and continues to serve as a member of the Internet Societal Task Force and its steering group that focuses on making the Internet accessible to everyone and analyzing international, national and local policies surrounding Internet use. He is honorary chairman of the Ipv6 Forum, dedicated to raising awareness and speeding the introduction of the new Internet protocol.

Cerf has served as a member of the U.S. Presidential Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) since 1997. He is a principal for the Global Internet Project (GIP), and he is on the Board of Directors for numerous organizations, including the the Endowment for Excellence in Education, Folger Shapespeare Library, Gallaudet University, the Internet Policy Institute, and the MCI WorldCom Foundation.
