Student Organizations and Publications
Many of our students get involved with extracurricular activities early on in their academic careers and participate in organizations that help them network, meet other students in their major and build leadership skills. Below are some of the key organizations and opportunities that are key to majors in the School of Visual Communication.
This is the National Photographers Press Association Ohio University chapter. This organization advocates for visual journalists in print, broadcast and digital.
The Ohio University Multimedia Society is comprised of all students who are interested in exploring design across a variety of platforms. At least once a semester, student members take a trip to larger-market cities and tour companies that are successful within the visual communication industry.

The Society for Photographic Illustrators brings together students who are interested in commercial photography. SPI students go on field trips to studios and network at seminars.
Backdrop Magazine is a student-produced lifestyle magazine that showcases photography, infographics, design and writing. This publication comes out four times a year.
VARIANT Magazine is a print and online student-run publication that values diversity and represent all types of cultures and identities in its issues.
Thread Magazine’s mission is to “encourage inclusivity and confident self-expression through diverse perspectives.” This publication is Ohio University’s largest fashion magazine.
The Post is Ohio University’s student-produced publication. Started in 1973, it is the university’s oldest publication. The Post is published weekly in print and daily online.
