Community Education Workshop Series

Community Education workshops are open to the general public regardless of educational background. These classes are self-supporting, and the fees collected from Community Education cover all instructional, administrative, and overhead cost of the program.  

All ages are welcome, unless noted.

Community Education workshops do not carry credit applicable toward an Ohio University degree or transferable to other institutions. Classes are scheduled year-round.

Valentine's Day Candle-making

Grab some friends and join us for a beginner-friendly candle-making class. Emma Martin, owner and operator of B&E Candle Co. will share her favorite Valentine's Candle scents, some history behind Valentine's Day in candle-making, and give you hands-on experience pouring your very own candles. We will be pouring two heart-shaped candles and rolling three pink beeswax candles.

Weave this beautiful medium market basket using flat and round reeds. You will learn plain weave, twining, and lashing techniques to form the base, weave up the sides, and cap off the edge of this traditional basket design. "May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light, may good luck pursue you each morning and night."  In this class, you will learn the difference between Irish whisky and American style whiskey with a flight of varying brands while discussing the history behind the holiday.  You will also build two St. Patrick's Day inspired cocktails, just in time to celebrate the holiday.

Work with stand-up comedian, Lori Graves, to learn how to construct and perform a three to five-minute comedy set that you will perform at the end of the sessions.

Emma Martin, owner and operator of B & E Candle Co. and second-generation candle maker, will be sharing some popular candle scents, how to mix your own custom scent, and how to make your very own candles! You will receive hands-on experience pouring your own scented candles with the best ingredients for the perfect candle-burning experience. We will be pouring two soy wax candles with over 30 scents to mix and match!

Memory Shadow Box

It’s hard to let go of items that spark memories of loved ones and important events, but over time these things can cause clutter or get shoved in a drawer to be forgotten. Shadow boxes offer a way to honor a person or time and showcase memories in an intentional way. In this workshop each person will receive a shadow box and be guided through how to style and showcase their chosen photos and/or items. Crafting tools will be provided to assist you and make your shadow box extra special. Options for items to bring with you: 1-5 photos, notes/letters, ticket stubs, stickers, stamps, travel documents, poems, quotes, small trinkets, jewelry, recipes, notes about the person /people, place, or time, etc.

Exploring Hiking in Ross County

Go hiking with confidence and experience the outdoor life in Ross County in new ways.  Whether you’re hitting the trails for the first time or you are an experienced hiker you are bound to navigate something new, gain endurance, and meet new friends.  Participants will learn to prepare for a day hike, what essential items to bring while hiking, and where to explore local trails. We will explore a different trail each meeting in our local area.

Scaffolding: How To Write a Song in Four Easy and Fun Steps

This workshop introduces attendees to the songwriting technique, known as "scaffolding." Attendees will work together as a group to generate topics and a title for a song, then move on to writing lyrics as a group exercise utilizing a familiar melody that everyone knows. Finally, the melody is discarded, and the newly generated lyrics are quickly drafted into a song by instructor Bruce Dalzell, while he also demonstrates how this technique may be done on one's one. The "scaffold" is built using the familiar melody, then discarded once the work is done!

Botanical Cocktails and Floral Garnishes

With spring right around the corner, this class will cover the beauty of botanical cocktails. Using fresh florals to create simples, shrubs, and infusions to elevate your spring beverages. We will also discuss trends in the spirit world and how distillers are including botanicals in their products while sampling a few varieties. Along with samples, you will create 2 botanical cocktails, both including beautiful and intricate garnish techniques.

This will be the first of its kind. Join Tara Gillum, owner of Steiner's Speakeasy, as we dive into the world of Agave spirits. You will receive an introductory cocktail, I Love You Elote, Cointreau and The Infatuation Magazine's Margarita Nation Top Margarita in the Country, with a discussion on how that margarita came to life. You will also be walked through a tasting of 5 spirits that Tara considers to be excellent examples of this category. We will talk about production, farming, and what to look for on the label of your next bottle of tequila or mezcal.
