Carousel Mini-Module: AI Mash-Up -- From Course Design to Lesson Plan to Case Study

In this mini-module, participants will learn how to use a mash-up of multiple AI tools to prepare for a class when time is limited quickly. By starting with AI-generated syllabi, lesson plans, and case studies, and then using Copilot to create engaging lecture slides, participants can efficiently develop comprehensive course materials. This module encourages experimentation with different AI tools, refining outputs, and customizing content to suit individual teaching styles, ultimately saving time and enhancing the quality of instruction. This is the one to watch if you want to see a little bit of everything and get inspired by the possibilities of AI in education.

Vanilla Introduction:

This mini-module came out of desperation. It was 4 pm and I had nothing prepared for my 9:30 class the next day. It is my first time teaching this course and a colleague has shared tons of resources and materials. I am much more comfortable teaching a course with a textbook to fall back on, so when I am completely stuck, I have something to fall back on. All day this class was rolling around the back of my head, but none of my ideas felt right. I decided to use AI to start at the beginning. First, I asked Claude to make me a sample syllabus for the course. Then, I picked one of the topics that closely aligned with what I wanted to cover and asked Claude to create a lesson. But that wasn't enough, I needed more information about one of the recommended resources, so I asked for that. Next, I decided I wanted to use their idea of a case study. So I prompted Claude to create my case study resources. At this point in time, I was out of Claude time, so I had to shift to Copilot. I needed slides for the lecture part of the Claude created lesson plan. Copilot created text for all the slides I needed, but it wasn't in slide form. Now I jumped over to PowerPoint and used the embedded Copilot feature and asked it to create slides. Not only did it create my slides, they were beautiful! I get tired and lazy; often, my slides are text-heavy with few images, but these have easily readable text and supporting images. For this module, you will watch the video and hopefully be inspired. No formal instructions, just try out a tool or multiple tools. Don't be afraid to ask the AI to change things up, provide more detail, or even start over with a different AI if the one you are using isn't bringing you joy!
