Carousel Mini-Module: Generating Examples and Nonexamples

In this mini-module, participants will learn how to use AI to create examples and nonexamples, which are crucial for solidifying the understanding of key terms and concepts. By leveraging AI tools like Claude and MagicSchool AI's Exemplar and Non-exemplar tool, participants can generate more retrieval opportunities during lectures, online activities, or other tasks, thereby enhancing students' comprehension of key ideas.

If you are not interested in the podcast, go to the Vanilla Intro below.

A Google NotebookLM podcast generated from the Vanilla Intro, Task, and Reflection prompts. This podcast is hilarious, somehow the AI podcast generator changed the phrase "examples and nonexamples" to spell out the letters in the word A-N-D. It also talks about "learning styles" which has been totally debunked by research but is widely believed by the public.

Vanilla Introduction:

Below you'll find a mini-module related using AI to create examples and nonexamples. One of the things we know from the Science of Learning is that examples and nonexamples solidify our understanding of key terms and concepts, by using AI to help us create more retrieval opportunities during lectures, online activities, or other tasks, we support our students' comprehension of key ideas. Watch the video, peruse the materials, and then engage in the activity and reflection. Below I provide demonstrations with two tools that may be new to you. I experimented with Claude and the output was adequate and I used Magic School AI's Exemplar and Non-exemplar tool as well.  If you are looking for a platform, I suggest you try out Claude for this assignment or MagicSchool AI's tool. I will be honest both of these videos are examples of when AI takes things in a different direction and you need to guide it to get it closer to what you are looking for. Don't be afraid to re-prompt and redirect AI!

5. Tool/Platform:

  • Claude and/or MagicSchool AI (create a teacher account and select the Exemplar & Non-Exemplar tool)

Bonus Step:

Try it in both platforms and compare the results! Which one is more successful? Which one requires more revision? What do you think about embedding more examples and non-examples into your teaching practice?
