Fall Spotlight on Learning highlights Great College Teaching

Corbin Campbell

The Ohio University community is invited to a Fall 2023 Spotlight on Learning presentation Great College Teaching: Actionable Practices and Policies by Corbin Campbell, Ph.D., Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Associate Professor, School of Education, American University.

Made possible through a Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment collaboration with University College and the Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Committee, the fall spotlight sets the stage for conversations and initiatives throughout the year designed to promote teaching excellence at OHIO.

The event will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 25, in Baker University Center, Room 240/242.

Campbell is the recipient of a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant to develop a policy playbook for equity-based teaching in higher education. Her book GREAT COLLEGE TEACHING: Where it Happens and How to Foster It Everywhere presents a multi-institutional observational study that covered more than 700 higher education courses in a range of contexts, from regional public universities to highly ranked private universities, from small liberal arts colleges to large flagship universities. She examines what each type of institution typically excels at and where they often fall short.

Her additional research, funded by the Spencer Foundation and the National Academy of Education, examines three interrelated streams: college teaching in diverse institutional contexts, assessments of higher education quality, and the organizational environments that support faculty in thriving in their careers. research has been published in several top-tier journals, such as the Journal of Higher Education, Research in Higher Education, Review of Higher Education, and Teachers College Record. Her work has been highlighted in news venues, such as Inside Higher Education, the Wall Street Journal, NPR, and the New York Times. Dr. Campbell has served on several editorial boards including Review of Higher Education and Review of Educational Research. In 2015, Dr. Campbell was awarded the National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Through event participation, attendees will have the opportunity to identify practices and policies associated with exemplary teaching institutions, reflect on their own implementation of these practices in their units or departments and identify strategies to support practice implementation where and when possible.

The spring 2024 Spotlight on Learning Conference will highlight and celebrate great college teaching at OHIO.
