Program Overview

The Writing Certificate provides students of all majors (except English) the opportunity to enhance their writing abilities and have this expertise appear as a credential on their transcripts. There is a national demand for employees who have strong skills in writing. For example, a survey of employers conducted for the Association of American Colleges and Universities revealed that 89 percent of those surveyed identified the ability to communicate effectively as a key intellectual skill for successful employees. This certificate provides a vehicle for enhancing the intellectual and personal development of students by allowing them to strengthen their writing skills and, at the same time, explore new topics and issues related to their personal interests.

Students must earn a B (3.0) or better in each of the courses that count toward the Writing Certificate.

English majors cannot participate in the Writing Certificate program.

Careers and Graduate School

The writing certificate will demonstrate that a student in any major has added experience in writing, thereby increasing a student?s overall marketability. In addition, the certificate will benefit students who plan to apply to graduate programs, as it will signify additional experience with writing in their own fields, as well as across the curriculum.

How to Enroll

Students can add the Writing Certificate by completing the College of Arts & Sciences' "Application for Update of Academic Programs." Please contact the certificate director, Dr. Talinn Phillips, with questions or for certificate-related advising.

Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission: No requirements beyond University admission requirements.

Change of Program Policy: No selective or limited admission requirements.

External Transfer Admission: No requirements beyond University admission requirements.

Certificate Requirements

Certificate Hours Requirement

The writing certificate* requires a minimum of 18 hours. Students must earn a B (3.0) or better in each of the courses that count toward the writing certificate.

Core Courses

Note: Junior composition exemptions, such as those based on exemption exams, transfer credit, Honor's Tutorial exemption, or AP English scores, do not count toward the credits required for the Writing Certificate core courses.

Junior Composition Equivalency

You can also complete the university?s junior-level composition requirement by passing two junior composition equivalency (JE) courses within your program of study, or by passing one JE course within your program of study and one JE course outside your program of study, as approved by your department/school. You may use two JE courses outside your program of study, providing both courses are approved by your departments/school.
