Bachelor of Music in Music Theory


Note: This degree has been temporarily suspended during the transition from quarters to semesters.

The undergraduate program in Music Theory is designed for those students who wish to pursue academic training in music that will prepare them for graduate work in music theory, composition, or music history. At the undergraduate level, the curriculum provides solid fundamental musicianship skills in applied music, written theory, aural perception, music history and literature, and functional piano skills. In the final two years of study, courses in counterpoint and analysis are supplemented by electives in music literature, composition, and electronic music as well as applied studies and academic courses outside the School of Music.

Master of Music in Music Theory


The graduate program in Music Theory is intended for those students whose interest in music theory leads them to desire to teach and perform research at the college or university level. The program is designed to prepare students for further work at the Ph.D. level in the field. Admittance to the program requires a sample essay, preferably on a music analysis topic, and a personal interview including a demonstration of aural and keyboard proficiency. 

The program requires courses in analysis, music history, composition electives, and proficiency in reading either German or French. A thesis is required for graduation.
