Whether you're looking for course coverage when you're at a conference, professional trainings for your department, or want a presentation for your student group, Women's Center staff can provide you with a lecture and/or interactive workshop on sex and gender that will meet your needs. Women's Center 101

Topic: What is the Women's Center and why does it exist?

Duration: For a short overview of the Women's Center, we request five minutes. However, we can provide a longer talk about the Women's Center, and the importance of our programs. Please contact us with what information you would like included and we can discuss the time needed to cover the topic.

Women's Mentoring 101

Topic: What is the Women's Mentoring Program and what does it entail? This brief program introduces students to the Women's Mentoring Program which pairs undergraduates with women in their personal or profession field of interest. What is a mentor, how does mentorship benefit students, requirements for the program, and the application process are presented.

Duration: For a short overview of the Women's Mentoring Program, we request five minutes. However, we can add it to the Mentoring Women: A Toolkit for Success if you're looking for a longer program.

Gender 101

Topic: How is masculinity and femininity defined and coded within different cultures? What are the implications for men and women?

Duration: This workshop can be tailored to fit the time allotted to us, but we recommend a minimum of twenty minutes. Ideally, this workshop would last for one hour.

Gendered Issues in Communication

Topic: Originally requested by a group wanting to look at interpersonal communication and gender issues, this workshop delves into a 101 on the following: mansplaining, interruptions, coded language, and gendered insults. It delves into next steps for allyship and improved communication on teams.

Duration: At least 50 minutes, but this can be tailored to your group's needs.

Identifying Rape Culture and How to Respond

Topic: This workshop will provide participants with the tools needed to identify comments, actions, and myths that uphold rape culture. Participants will leave having role played bystander intervention strategies to disrupt rape culture.

Duration: This workshop ideally lasts 1.5 hours; however, a shortened version without rope play can be offered to fit into 50 minute class times. 

Continuing Education: We strongly encourage that those attending this workshop also attend a Better Bystanders training, which focuses on bystander intervention, offered through the Campus Involvement Center.

Career/Graduate School Mapping with Beyoncé

Topic: Utilizing the popular culture icon Beyoncé, this workshop helps participants to think about either their career path or preparing for graduate


school. Participants can expect to create a vision board detailing their strengths, how they are currently using or could be using their strengths, obstacles in their path, and much more!

Duration: This workshop requires at least two hours, but can be offered in a modified format (1 hour) as a take home assignment, but without the vision board.

Audience:  This workshop works well for staff retreats, in senior seminars, or for the executive board of student organizations.

Gender and the Media

Topic: This interactive discussion will provide a guideline for practicing media literacy, which will then be applied to various examples of women's representation in the media. Additionally, the presenter will provide a context for understanding what demographics are most frequently represented in popular culture and how that can impact our reactions to the ways in which marginalized populations are portrayed.

Duration: This discussion can be tailored to fit the time allotted to us, but we recommend a minimum of thirty minutes. Ideally, this workshop would last for one hour.

She Was Caring and Helpful: Writing Letters of Recommendation and Gendered Language

Topic: A partnership between the Women's Center and CLDC, this workshop uses studies on gendered differences in letter writing to help recommenders improve their letters of recommendation generally. This workshop is also beneficial for hiring managers in understanding the role that implicit bias may play in letters of recommendation.

Duration: Ideally, this workshop lasts for at least one hour.

What to bring: To make the most out of this workshop, we encourage participants to bring letters of recommendation that they have previously written.

Gender Equity in Higher Education

Topic: The objectives for this program are as follows: strengthen one's understanding of gender bias within higher education; identify obstacles that can be a detriment to women's successes; determine the impact that inequity has on students within departments; understand our roles in building an inclusive environment; invest in decreasing gender bias within the workplace and classrooms; access additional resources like Equal Opportunity and Educational Opportunity at OHIO for information about legal responsibilities, information for reporting, and continuing education.

Duration: One hour.

Audience: Best suited to current faculty and staff, this workshop can also be beneficial as a preparing future academic workshop for graduate students.

American Association of University Women's Start Smart Salary Negotiation

Topic: This salary negotiation workshop presents the wage gap, with a particular discussion of the gender wage gap and how to combat it by improving one's salary negotiation skills. Salary negotiation is analyzed through budgeting, salary benchmarking, and negotiation tips and tactics.


This workshop is made possible through support from the AAUW, the Graduate College, and CLDC.

Duration: The full workshop is two hours. In order for participants to receive the benefits, we do require the full two hours for the workshop; however, we can do a five minute pitch for why participants should attend the workshop.

Minimum attendance: Because of the staffing requirements of this workshop, we respectfully request that all invited presentations of Start Smart have at least ten attendees. If you have any questions about this, please contact Dr. Geneva Murray at murraym2@ohio.edu.

Stay Out of Your Own Way: How Gender Stereotypes Threaten Our Success

Topic: This workshop will help participants examine the language which they use to communicate their confidence level. We will highlight the ways in which women have traditionally undersold their skills, and develop new ways of speaking about ourselves. While the focus of the workshop is on empowering women, the skills discussed are applicable to everyone regardless of gender identity. Additionally, we encourage attendance from anyone interested in serving in a supervisory role, as it can help understand the gendered differences in communication styles you may notice from your colleagues. It's important that supervisors, Human Resources, and colleagues know how they can be supportive of empowering others.

Duration: 1.5 hours

Potential for a series: This workshop counts towards the She Leads OHIO requirements. Please talk to Women's Center staff about your participants continuing in the program.

Mentoring Women: A Toolkit for Success and Support

Topic: This interactive workshop focuses on ways to effectively mentor undergraduate and graduate women. Mentorship can be a crucial element to women's successes, and can be a personally rewarding activity for those who function as their mentors.

Duration: One and a half hours (although this can be adjusted depending on the focus requested by you; at a minimum, we request 45 minutes).

Eating Disorders and Body Image

Topic: From working with physical education instructors on how to support positive body image, nurses on treating patients with diabetes in a way that encourages body positivity, to a discussion of the changing standards of beauty over time, our Director, Dr. Murray, would be happy to work with you to devise a lecture or workshop that best suits your needs. Dr. Murray served as the Public Policy Assistant for the Eating Disorders Coalition for Research, Policy and Action in 2006-2007, and has been a speaker and activist promoting eating disorder awareness and stories about recovery since 2003. She is not a clinician, but can speak to social, cultural, and political issues connected with eating disorders and recovery.

Duration: Depends on topics covered.

Surfing the crimson wave, Eve's curse, Aunt Flow, Shark Week: Let's break through the Euphemisms. Period.

Topic: This lecture provides an opportunity for analysis of menstrual stigmas and the importance of discussing menstruation, reducing stigma, and providing access to appropriate sanitary care. The presentation will highlight a number of recent social movements addressing menstruation and connect stigmas to real-world, tangible, impacts on education, poverty, health care access, self-esteem and sustainability.

Time Required: One hour


Topic: Black women are killed by police too. In February 2015, the African American Policy Forum engaged the public in a discussion acknowledging the experiences of policy brutality against Black women and girls under #SayHerName. This talk will provide a context for the #SayHerName movement, define intersectionality, and present the #SayHerName quilt created in January 2016 by the Women's Center, Multicultural Center, LGBT Center, and Unified Sisters.

Time Required: Minimum of thirty minutes. If participants would like to create their own #SayHerName quilt (or use this to create other social art, like the Monument Quilt) we can provide instructions, but would need at least one hour for the workshop.

Gender & Sport

Topic: The Women's Center Director, M.Geneva Murray, PhD, is happy to provide guest lectures on the topic of gender testing in sport and/or gender in roller derby. Her dissertation was entitled: "The Unladylike Ladies of Roller Derby?: How Spectators, Players and Derby Wives Do and Redo Gender and Heteronormativity in All-Female Roller Derby". Any excuse to talk about roller derby is welcomed!
