Scott Titsworth & Lynn Harter Launchpad: The Scripps Student Experience Fund

Beyond what’s been taught in the classroom, employers want to hire college graduates who already have hands-on experience, and research tells us that’s precisely what students say they need most. They want experiential learning opportunities that give them a competitive edge as they enter the job market. For many students, these types of experiences are not financially within reach.

That’s the purpose of the Scott Titsworth & Lynn Harter Launchpad: the Scripps Student Experience Fund. It’s designed to hurdle this cost barrier, enabling students to gain practical workplace experience that will enable them to hit the ground running in a post-graduation job.

Supporting Experiential Learning

While internships are at the top of the list when it comes to experiential learning, Ohio University also offers study away programs, leadership, community engagement, research and creative activity experiences to help students get the training and proficiency they need to excel in the workforce.

The Launchpad Fund is designed to provide crucial financial assistance so students can afford an internship or other experiential learning experience.

  • Community Engagement
  • Internship
  • Leadership
  • Research
  • Creative Activity

Opportunities Must Meet Outlined Elements

Eligible opportunities must include the following elements:

Budget and Allowable Expenses

The spring funding cycle will support experiential learning opportunities taking place between November 1, 2026 and May 1, 2027.

Budget Guidelines

  • If your opportunity has not yet been approved, you may still apply – for example, you applied to several internships but still haven’t heard whether you’ve been accepted for any yet. You may still apply and submit a budget estimate for the location(s) of your intended internship(s).
  • Quality and completeness of the budget is one of the criteria for this award, therefore, it is important to be as specific as possible. Do research, estimate and provide the source for estimates when no exact budget information is available.
  • When completing the budget section of the application, applicants should take care to ask specifically for things that are directly related to the experiential learning opportunity. Students will be given space to explain budget requests, and this is a very important part of the application process. Applicants should use the space provided to help the committee to understand the impact that this funding will have on the ability to participate.

Examples of Expenses

  • Program Fees Associated with Study Away/Abroad
  • Equipment and Material
  • Travel and Living Expenses

Other Considerations

Applications for undergraduate research projects with human or animal subjects require IRB or IACUC approval. Award applications can be approved prior to receiving the appropriate ethics board approval. However, funding will be withheld until we receive verification of approval or exemption.

Preflection and Reflection

Students have many experiences, but a preflection, which is a narrative description of the project before the experience, and reflection after the experience are what turn an experience into a learning opportunity.

These awards are competitive and will be evaluated on the quality and completeness of the narratives in addition to the quality and completeness of the budget.

Narrative Description of Project / Preflection

Students will be asked to address a prompt and may write a response no longer than 500 words.

  1. Brief description of your experiential learning opportunity, including:
    • Location of your experience
    • Dates of your experience
    • Basic description of your experiential learning opportunity
    • Faculty/staff at OHIO who can verify your participation
  2. In what ways does this opportunity require deep engagement?
  3. In what ways will you actively engage with mentor?
  4. In what ways will this experience push you beyond familiar territory into the unknown?
  5. Explain what opportunities you will have for independent judgement and what ownership you will take of the process and the outcomes.
  6. How is this experience important to your undergraduate experience and your future goals? What are your expected learning outcomes?

After the Experience / Reflection

The Narrative Description of the Project serves as a Preflection.

Upon completion of the experience, students will also be required to formally reflect through the submission of a 500-word summary. You will be prompted to do this via email.
