Our Mission and Vision

OMSAR’s vision is to produce global citizens whose leadership and scholarship development inspire them to demonstrate the value of education and diversity.

The Office for Multicultural Student Access and Retention (OMSAR) is committed to attracting and retaining highly talented and capable students of diverse backgrounds to maximize their leadership potential through educational and service opportunities. OMSAR programmatic activities instill in students the importance of scholarly pursuits and the value of education. We will serve as a resource to the Ohio University community on issues of access, retention and student success as well as promote the educational benefits of diversity and the appreciation for difference.

Student Expo

OMSAR sponsors a session at the annual Student Expo to highlight the research or creative activity OMSAR scholars are engaged with during their academic experience. The OMSAR sessions also highlight research pertaining to diversity and inclusion.

OMSAR Courses

OMSAR Course Series

This three-course series rotates annually on topics of academic achievement, leadership, and community service. This course is open to all students at Ohio University and is required for students with the Templeton, Appalachian, Urban, and Rankin scholarship.

UC2900 Post-Baccalaureate
Preparation Course

During the fall term, junior or senior students may enroll in a class to help them prepare for their job search and/or graduate school application.

Study Abroad

Study Abroad

Spend one week this spring break in the Caribbean volunteering in Jamaican communities! During this two-city program, students will be immersed in Jamaican culture working with Stones Hope School. Experiential learning activities and learning include conversations with local leaders about history, politics, and environmental conservation.

Earn your Junior Composition credit while spending 10 days this winter break in the Caribbean volunteering in Belizean communities! Students will be immersed in culture while assisting locals in building sustainable, earth-bag half-way homes for orphans who are pushed out of the foster care system. Students will also assist with local, organic farming and community outreach.

Mexico

Guanajuato has a bustling market that sells everything from nopales and fruit, clothes, souvenirs, and even live birds. The streets are always overflowing with people navigating through the underground tunnels or cutting through secret alleyways to get from one area of the city to another. The view from El Pípila standing watch over the city is phenomenal!
