International Student Union

The International Student Union (ISU) functions as the umbrella organization for internationally-focused student organizations at Ohio University. The members come from all corners of the world, representing the collective educational, cultural and developmental interests of countries across the globe. 

ISU Vision 

To promote unity, diversity, and a global mindset within the university, the community, and the organizations we represent. 

ISU Mission

To represent Ohio University international students by fostering an inclusive community through developing global awareness, promoting inter-cultural exchange, and cultivating understanding with the university and the broader community.  

ISU Purpose and Objectives

ISU serves as an advocate for Ohio University international students and the umbrella organization for internationally focused student organizations at Ohio University.

  • To represent, channel, organize, voice, international community's interests.
  • To promote a sense of community at Ohio University.
  • To provide opportunities for Ohio University international students to develop leadership and career-related skills.
  • To advise and assist all international students and ISU member organizations.
  • To support and endorse other Ohio University organizations which share ISU’s vision and/or mission.
  • To serve as a programming body for international students and organizations that organize events which increase intercultural exchange and awareness for Ohio University and the communities for which it serves.

Husain Bani Oraba

Country of Origin: Oman

Program and year of study: PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, first year

Why ISU: For me, ISU felt like home from the start. It's a place with such a rich mix of cultures and such a warm, welcoming community — connecting people, cultures, and organizations from all over the world. That's exactly the kind of environment I wanted to grow in, both academically and personally.

Fun Fact: I love hiking and exploring new places — always looking for the next trail or hidden spot to discover.

Kehinde Fawole

Country of Origin: Nigeria

Program and Year of Study: M.A. in Latin American Studies, Second Year

Why ISU:
It is International Student Union (ISU) because I enjoy working and connecting with people from different cultures and helping create a sense of community. As an international student, I understand how important it is to feel welcomed, represented, and supported while studying away from home. Through ISU, I hope to contribute to bringing students together, celebrating our diverse cultures, and making the international student experience at Ohio University even more engaging and inclusive.

Fun Fact:
I speak four languages: Yoruba, English, Portuguese, and basic Spanish.

Parwana Hamdam

Country of Origin: Afghanistan

Program and year of study: PhD in Communication Studies – Health Communication Track, 3nd Year
Scripps College of Communication, Ohio University. Research focus: Maternal health among immigrant and displaced communities, with an emphasis on cultural and communication challenges in healthcare settings. My work is rooted in applied research aimed at improving real-world health outcomes for marginalized populations.

Why ISU: ISU creates a warm and inclusive space where international students can celebrate their cultures, build community, and support one another through the journey of studying abroad. I joined ISU because I believe in the importance of cultural exchange and wanted to contribute to making Ohio University a more welcoming place for students from around the world.

Fun Fact: I’m passionate about exploring different cultures, especially through their traditional clothing, food, and market life! I love visiting local markets, trying street food, and learning how culture shapes everyday experiences.

Country of Origin: Nigeria

Program and year of study: Instructional Technology Year 2 (PhD)

Why ISU: Being part of the International Students Union (ISU) means more than service to international students, It means belonging to a family, it also means building bridges across cultures, creating a sense of home away from home, and advocating for the needs of our diverse international student body. I believe in the power of community. As an international student, I’ve experienced both the excitement and the challenges that come with studying abroad. ISU was one of the first spaces where I felt seen, supported, and connected. By helping others navigate their journey, celebrating our cultures, and working together to ensure every international student at Ohio University feels valued, heard, and empowered, I am excited serve and to be part of this great community.

Programming Director

Ann Lokeder Natiom

Country of Origin: Kenya

Program and Year of Study: PhD in Mass Communication – Journalism & Digital Media, 3rd Year Scripps College of Communication, Ohio University. My research explores digital activism, community organizing, and narrative power, with a focus on how marginalized and rural communities use media to build solidarity, resist erasure, and shape public discourse. My work blends qualitative research, storytelling, and community‑centered communication.

Why ISU: I joined ISU because I believe deeply in the power of community and cultural exchange. ISU is one of the few spaces on campus where international students can show up fully as themselves celebrating identity, sharing traditions, and finding support in one another. As Programming Director, I’m excited to help create events that feel welcoming, joyful, and rooted in the diverse experiences of our global community.

Fun Fact: I’m obsessed with community storytelling and love exploring how people express identity through everyday life especially food, music, and local traditions. Whether it’s a neighborhood festival, a rural community gathering, or a cultural market, I’m always drawn to the stories that live in those spaces.
