Buying Living Necessities
Welcome to Athens! Decorating and personalizing your new dorm or apartment will help you feel more at home and create an environment that will help you be successful in your studies.
Where to Buy What You Need to Succeed!
There are many stores and shops in and around the Athens area from which you can purchase living necessities. In the table, you will find both new and thrift store options.
Why Buy Pre-Owned (i.e. from a Thrift Store)?
When you thrift (e.g., buying pre-owned), you’re choosing to reuse. That choice keeps items out of landfills, money in your pocket, cuts down on new production, conserves energy, water, and raw materials, and gives everyday items a longer, more meaningful life.
Misconceptions Around Thrifting*
“Thrifting is unhygienic”
Many items in regular retail stores are tried on or returned after being worn. Thrifted clothing is no different. Washing items before wearing them ensures they are clean and hygienic.
“Thrifting is overly competitive”
There is usually one of each item so you should go in with a flexible list, an open mindset, and treat it like a treasure hunt can make the experience fun and enjoyable. Shopping with a friend can also help!
“Thrifting is not inclusive of all body sizes”
People of all sizes donate clothing, which means thrift stores stock items in a wide range of sizes, including plus sizes. While it may take some extra searching, great pieces can be found for everyone.
“Secondhand fashion is outdated”
Some thrifted items may be older but many stores offer trendy pieces, vintage finds, and even designer items. Since fashion is cyclical, thrifting is a great way to find classic staples and on-trend styles from different eras.
