Using your financial aid for Global Opportunities programs

Ohio University financial aid may be applied to Ohio University-sponsored study abroad and exchange programs, programs offered through the Ohio International Consortium (OIC), and affiliated third party providers . See Planning your experience for more details on these programs.

The maximum amount a student may receive from all campus administered scholarships, including departmental, endowed, and University-funded scholarships, cannot exceed the cost of attendance established annually by Ohio University.

The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships  can also answer specific questions.

    Eligibility

    An Applicant:

    • Must be an OHIO student applying for participation on one of the following domestic program opportunities:

      • Storytelling & Theme Parks
      • SCUBA Diving non-credit experience

    • *Please note that not all domestic experiences are eligible for this scholarship.  Please write to global.opportunities@ohio.edu if you have questions on your program's eligibility.
    • Must submit a 500 word essay outlining their goals for the experience.  Applicants should specifically address the question: how do you anticipate this experience will enhance your educational, personal, and/or career goals?
    • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2.
    • Must have a current FAFSA on file with the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships.
    • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
    • Notes on eligibility:
      • Preference is given to juniors and seniors. 
      • Preference is given to students who have not had a previous off campus experience (study abroad or away).
      • Previous recipients of funding from the Office of Global Opportunities will only be considered if funds remain after all other applicants are considered.

    Award amounts are intended to defray the cost of additional expenses associated with the experience and will range from $100-$750.

    Eligibility

     

    1. Must be an undergraduate, degree-seeking OHIO student applying for participation in a study abroad program for academic credit. Program must be credit-bearing and can be sponsored by OHIO or another accredited institution.
    2. Must qualify for financial aid according to the guidelines determined by the Ohio University Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships. All applicants must have a FAFSA on file at the time of funding application to be considered for an award.
    3. Must be in good academic standing.
    4. Must be a US citizen or permanent resident.

     

    Note: Preference is given to students who have not had previous education abroad experience at the college level. Previous recipients of funding from the Office of Global Opportunities (formally known as the Office of Education Abroad) will only be considered if funds remain after all other applicants are considered.

    3. Must be US citizen or permanent resident alien.

     

    Application Requirements:

    1. Persoal Essay- The essay should be two pages, double-spaced. Please tell us: Why you identify as someone from a diverse background,how your perspective will influence your experience abroad, how the scholarship will allow you to positively impact the OHIO community and/or the world).  You must be prepared to upload your essay at the time of application submission.

       

    2. One reference- You are also required to submit a letter of reference from someone who knows you personally, professionally, or academically (not a friend or relative), speaking to how you will benefit from your chosen international experience. Your reference should submit their letter via email to:  ogodiversityscholarship@ohio.edu. It is your responsibility to ensure that the required reference letter is received by the Office of Global Opportunities by the February 15 deadline. 
     

    The Office of Global Opportunities must receive all of the above items in order to consider your application. 

    Award Amount

    Award amounts are intended to defray the cost of travel associated with education abroad programs, successful applicants will recieve $1000. The award will be directly applied to their student account during the term in which the awardee is scheduled to travel abroad.

    1. Must be currently enrolled for admission at OHIO and in the Global Leadership Certificate Program.
    2. Must have a FAFSA on file and qualify for need-based financial support.
    3. Must be a resident of one of the Ohio counties designated as Appalachian as determined by the Appalachian Regional Commission.
    4. Must be applying to or participating in a required GLC international experience prior to August 2017. Acceptance to your international program is not required to be considered for this award

     

    Completed applications, including 500-word essay, must be submitted to global.opportunities@ohio.edu by 5:00 p.m. EST on February 13,  2017.

  • J. Michael Lawrie Global Education Scholarship Application

    Deadlines
    Application deadline for winter break, spring semester & spring break programs 2018-19: Monday, October 1, 2018 at 5pm.

    Application deadline for 2018 summer term, fall semester and academic year programs: March 1, 2018 at 5pm.

    Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all application materials, including references and reference signature pages, are received by the application deadline. 

    Eligibility (appliant must qualify in all categories)

    1. Majors from the College of Arts & Sciences with junior or senior status at the time of the program.
    2. Be enrolled full-time in the College of Arts & Sciences.
    3. Minimum 3.4 cumulative GPA.
    4. Be involved in leadership activities on campus.
    5. Possess a high degree of personal integrity.
    6. Must be applying or accepted to a faculty-led study abroad or exchange program sponsored by OHIO University.

    Reference Form

    All reference letters must contain the Lawrie Reference Form, referenced in the application. Make sure you download and print 2 copies, sign them and give one to each of your reference writers. References are submitted at ogolawriescholarship@ohio.edu.

    Applicants are responsible for ensuring that the required reference is received by the application deadline. 

    Eligibility (applicant must qualify in all categories)

    • Degree-seeking OHIO students.
    • Center for International Studies (CIS) students: undergraduate major, minor and certificate students, graduate students or Global Leadership Center students.
    • Awards must benefit a study away experience, including domestic and international study away programs, student exchanges, internships, volunteer opportunities and research.
    • Minimum duration of travel will be two weeks.

      • Semester or academic year – students required to enroll for 12 OHIO credits, or the full-time equivalent, during each term abroad.
      • Summer programs – students required to enroll for a minimum of 6 OHIO credits, or the equivalent.
      • Independent/graduate research - students required to work with faculty on research plan.

    Submission guidelines:

    1. Paper or electronic applications must be turned in directly to the program director.
    2. Completed scholarship application form, your essay, CV or résumé
    3. If you submit your application electronically, the subject line of e-mail should read: DML Scholarship, Program Name

  • Deadlines

    Early application is encouraged. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis twice per year and awards are made until allocated funds are used. Awards range from $500 to $1000.

    • Winter/spring eligible programs and Global Health Elective rotations (third or fourth year medical students and PA students) are due October 1 and November 1 at 11:59 pm (EST).
    • Summer/fall eligible programs and Global Health Elective rotations (third or fourth year medical students and PA students) are due  February 1 and March 1 at 11:59 pm (EST).

    A decision letter will be emailed to all applicants approximately two weeks after the deadline.

  • Objective:

    To provide students wishing to participate in ITDI-sponsored Education Abroad programs with partial financial assistance to cover travel related expenses through a competitive process.

     

    Nature of the Award:

    • Up to 10 awards will be granted during 2017

    • Up to $500 will be applied towards in-country travel expenses

    • Letter of award in recipient’s file with copy to the Dean or other academic authority as requested

    • This award is not considered financial aid and is not "need based"

     

    Eligibility

    Three separate award categories will be available

    • OUHCOM Students: Students currently enrolled in Years 1 to 4 at OUHCOM or CORE Residency programs

    • Ohio University students: Undergraduate and graduate students in good academic standing

    • Other Students: Undergraduate, graduate and Medical students from other institutions of higher education.

    • Fill out the ITDI Travel Award Application Form online
      (Form is active  - updated 01/31/2017).

    • Prepare an up to 2000 character essay on the topic listed below, including spaces, and paste it into the appropriate box. Paste the references into the corresponding box also (at least 3 papers or textbook references).

    • Deadline Feb 15, 2017

     

    IMPORTANT : The travel award process is competitive.  Essays not following the word limit or content guidelines will not be considered.  We highly suggest that you have a faculty member or advisor review your essay prior to submission.

     

    Selection process

    • Essays will be evaluated by a panel of ITDI members and students, and scored considering grammar and punctuation, clarity of ideas, overall content and relevance to the topic.

    • A decision letter will be emailed to the applicant two weeks after the deadline.

    • A letter of award, stating the nature of the competition and other relevant details, will be added to the applicant’s file at OUHCOM or in their school/program and sent to the Dean or other academic officer at their school as requested.

    • Award will be contingent on actual participation in the program and cannot be used to pay for program deposits.

    • Awards are not transferable and can not be deferred.
