Using your financial aid for Global Opportunities programs

Ohio University financial aid may be applied to Ohio University-sponsored study abroad and exchange programs, programs offered through the Ohio International Consortium (OIC), and affiliated third party providers . See Planning your experience for more details on these programs.

The maximum amount a student may receive from all campus administered scholarships, including departmental, endowed, and University-funded scholarships, cannot exceed the cost of attendance established annually by Ohio University.

The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships  can also answer specific questions.

Office of Global Opportunities

  • Program Eligibility 

    Office of Global Opportunities (OGO) Need-Based Travel Grant can be used for participation on OHIO Domestic programs, OHIO International programs, and other approved credit-bearing study away programs. Please reach out to OGO to make sure your program is eligible for awards.  

     

    Student Eligibility 

    1. Must be an undergraduate, degree-seeking OHIO student applying for participation in a study away program for academic credit.  

    2. Must qualify for financial aid according to the guidelines determined by the Ohio University Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships. All applicants must have a FAFSA on file at the time of funding application to be considered for an award.  *PLEASE NOTE:  Awardees must ensure that there is a FAFSA on file for the term of travel (ex. if applying for a scholarship for a fall 2020 program, you MUST have a FAFSA for the 2020-2021 academic year).  

    3. Must be in good academic and conduct standing. 

    4. Must be a US citizen or permanent resident. 

     

    Preference is given to students, who have not had previous study away experience (Domestic or International programs) at the college level. Previous recipients of funding from the Office of Global Opportunities will only be considered if funds remain after all other applicants are considered.

    1. FASFA - Applicant must have FASFA on file for current school year to be eligible for this award.  Check with the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships if you are unsure if you have a FAFSA on file.  *PLEASE NOTE:  Awardees must ensure that there is a FAFSA on file for the term of travel (ex. if applying for a scholarship for a fall 2020 program, you MUST have a FAFSA for the 2020-2021 academic year).

Max. 500 words.  You must be prepared to upload your essay at the time of application submission  

    2. DARS Report for review of academic performance. Please be prepared to upload this document.

    3. One academic reference (NOT a letter of recommendation – reference may or may not be contacted, depending on competitiveness of the applicant pool).    

    4. Program Cost Estimate-   You are also required to submit  a c ost estimate for your intended program.     2. Letters of Reference - Two letters from academic recommenders who can speak to your academic achievements and how the study abroad experience fits into your academic and career plans. Letters of recommendation must be received by the Office of Global Opportunities no later than Friday, February 15 at 5 p.m. EDT or your application will be deemed incomplete.       1. How do you identify as someone from a diverse background and how will that perspective influednce your study away experience (either domestically or globally)?

      2. What do you hope to take away from your experience? How do you expect to grow and develop during your program? 

      •   You must be prepared to upload your essay at the time of application submission.
    2. One reference - You are also required to submit a letter of reference from someone who knows you personally, professionally, or academically (not a friend or relative), speaking to how you will benefit from your chosen international experience. Your reference should submit their letter via email to:  ogodiversityscholarship@ohio.edu. It is your responsibility to ensure that the required reference letter is received by the Office of Global Opportunities by the deadline

    1. Must   have  previously  participated  on a college level, credit-bearing global program.   

      

    Application Requirements  

    * Note    All submissions must be applicants’ original work (including any images or text). An applicant's creative piece and/or rationale may be used to promote global programs across various university platforms.  This  application must be completed in one login session. Your changes will not be saved if you log out before you submit. Read the instructions carefully to make sure you have the required information and materials before you proceed.     

      

    1. Creative piece  – Share your global story using creative media. Why did you go on a global program and what are the benefits (personal, academic, or professional) of having a global experience? Please submit anything but an  essay – you can submit a video, short story, poem, graphic design, photo essay, music, spoken word,  etc … Emai l  global.opportunities@ohio.edu for questions regarding creative work submission.  There is no minimum  length requirement .   P lease be considerate of the time it will take for the committee to review your  piece.    

    2. Rationale   – Submit a brief rationale explaining your creative work and why you are planning to go on another global program. 250 words max.

    1. Must be currently enrolled for admission at OHIO and in the Global Leadership Certificate Program.
    2. Must have a FAFSA on file and qualify for need-based financial support.
    3. Must be a resident of one of the Ohio counties designated as Appalachian as determined by the Appalachian Regional Commission.
    4. Must be applying to or participating in a required GLC international experience prior to August 2019. Acceptance to your international program is not required to be considered for this award

     

    Completed applications, including 500-word essay, must be submitted to global.opportunities@ohio.edu, subject line "Wing Scholarship," by 5:00 p.m. EST on February 15,  2019.

  • Program Eligibility

    The J. Michael Lawrie Global Education Scholarship can be utilized on an international OHIO faculty-led or OHIO exchange program. 

     

    Applicant Eligibility (appliant must qualify in all categories)

    1. Majors from the College of Arts & Sciences with junior or senior status at the time of the program.
    2. Be enrolled full-time in the College of Arts & Sciences.
    3. Minimum 3.4 cumulative GPA.
    4. Be involved in leadership activities on campus.
    5. Possess a high degree of personal integrity.

     

    Application Instructions

    • Personal Essay: Tell us about yourself, your leadership-experience at Ohio University, your reasons for applying for this scholarship, and how this study abroad experience will benefit you personally, professionally and as a leader.   • Program Eligibility

    The Boundless: Study Away Scholarship for CIS Students can be utilized on a  study away experience, including domestic and international study away programs, student exchanges, internships, volunteer opportunities and research. Program must be a minimum of two weeks in length.

    Applicant Eligibility (appliant must qualify in all categories)

    • Degree-seeking OHIO students.
    • Center for International Studies (CIS) students: undergraduate major, minor and certificate students, graduate students or Global Leadership Center students.
    • Applicants must have identified their study away experience, even if still in the planning phase.

     

    Application and Personal Essay Instructions

    • Applications must be completed in one login session. If you log out, your work will not be saved. Have all required information and materials ready before you start an application.
    • Personal Essay: Tell us about yourself and describe why you wish to study, intern, volunteer or conduct research away and how the experience fits into your academic work with CIS. What factors led to this decision? What do you hope to gain from and what do you anticipate will be the impact of your experience? What initially inspired you to travel to this particular host location? In addition, describe your proposed study, intern, volunteer, or research experience and what factors led you to select this opportunity and the length of stay on-site. This essay should be double-spaced and one to two pages long. You will be prompted to upload the essay to this application.
    • One Reference: You will be required to list one reference in your application.  Please download the  Boundless Reference Guide  and include it in your email to your reference, as it containing helpful information for your reference writer. References should submit letters to  boundless@ohio.edu.

    Eligibility

    • For students studying abroad or conducting research in Asia.
    • OHIO undergraduate or graduate students in good academic standing
    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
    • Students must have their study abroad or reserach experiences planned at the time of application; the program must be an approved part of his/her degree program. Visit the Office of Global Opportunities for more information. 
    • Enrollment requirements:
      • Semester or academic year – students required to enroll for 12 OHIO credits, or the full-time equivalent, during each term abroad.
      • Summer programs – students required to enroll for a minimum of 6 OHIO credits, or the equivalent.
      • Independent/graduate research - students required to work with faculty on research plan.

    Application and Essay Instructions

    Complete applications must include the following items. Please make sure your essay and DARS or transcript and  ready before you proceed as you will need to upload them as part of your application.

    • In the 1-2 page, single-spaced personal essay, explain your interest in Asia, the education abroad program you have selected, and why you have chocen that program. If you have previously studied, worked or lived abroad in Asia, please provide a brief description of the experience(s) or program(s). For internships and/or independent study programs, please include a detailed explanation of proposed project/area of research.
    • The most current copy of your DARS or a transcript from OHIO. Note: graduate students, who have completed only one semester of study at OHIo will be asked to submit an undergraduate transcript.
    • This application requires two reference letters adressing the selection criteria listed. Must be received by the Office of Global Opportunities no later than March 1 at 5 p.m. See scholarship application for more information.   • Deadlines

    Early application is encouraged. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis twice per year and awards are made until allocated funds are used. Awards range from $500 to $1000.

    • Winter/spring eligible programs and Global Health Elective rotations (third or fourth year medical students and PA students) are due October 1 and November 1 at 11:59 pm (EST).
    • Summer/fall eligible programs and Global Health Elective rotations (third or fourth year medical students and PA students) are due  February 1 and March 1 at 11:59 pm (EST).

    A decision letter will be emailed to all applicants approximately two weeks after the deadline.

  • Objective:

    To provide students wishing to participate in ITDI-sponsored Education Abroad programs with partial financial assistance to cover travel related expenses through a competitive process.

     

    Nature of the Award:

    • Up to 10 awards will be granted during 2017

    • Up to $500 will be applied towards in-country travel expenses

    • Letter of award in recipient’s file with copy to the Dean or other academic authority as requested

    • This award is not considered financial aid and is not "need based"

     

    Eligibility

    Three separate award categories will be available

    • OUHCOM Students: Students currently enrolled in Years 1 to 4 at OUHCOM or CORE Residency programs

    • Ohio University students: Undergraduate and graduate students in good academic standing

    • Other Students: Undergraduate, graduate and Medical students from other institutions of higher education.

    • Prepare an up to 2000 character essay on the topic listed below, including spaces, and paste it into the appropriate box. Paste the references into the corresponding box also (at least 3 papers or textbook references).

    IMPORTANT : The travel award process is competitive.  Essays not following the word limit or content guidelines will not be considered.  We highly suggest that you have a faculty member or advisor review your essay prior to submission.

     

    Selection process

    • Essays will be evaluated by a panel of ITDI members and students, and scored considering grammar and punctuation, clarity of ideas, overall content and relevance to the topic.

    • A decision letter will be emailed to the applicant two weeks after the deadline.

    • A letter of award, stating the nature of the competition and other relevant details, will be added to the applicant’s file at OUHCOM or in their school/program and sent to the Dean or other academic officer at their school as requested.

    • Award will be contingent on actual participation in the program and cannot be used to pay for program deposits.

    • Awards are not transferable and can not be deferred.

  • Program Eligibility

    The API Merit/Need-Based Scholarship administered by the Office of Global Opportunities can be used for participation on an Academic Programs International (API) program. API is an affiliated provider with the Office of Global Opportunities. Please visit API's website  https://apiabroad.com/ for more information on the programs offered.

    NOTE: This scholarship is not available to students participating in a customized OHIO-API faculty-led program such as OHIO's Cuba programs or French Language and Culture in Grenoble.

     

    Student Eligibility

    1. Must be an undergraduate, degree-seeking OHIO student applying for participation in a study away program for academic credit through Academic Programs International (API). 
    2. All applicants must have a FAFSA on file at the time of funding application to be considered for an award. Applicants do not have to be currently receiving financial aid.
    3. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
    4. US citizens, permanent residents and international undergraduate OHIO students are encouraged to apply.

     

    Preference is given to students, who have not had previous study away experience (Domestic and International programs) at the college level. Previous recipients of funding from the Office of Global Opportunities will only be considered if funds remain after all other applicants are considered.

    Award Amount

    Up to $1000 is available (to be applied toward the cost of the program) for full-time enrollment during spring or fall terms. Up to $500 is available for summer programs.

     

    Several additional scholarships are available to API-program students directly through API. Please see the API website for more information.

  • Program Eligibility

    Ohio International Consortium Study Abroad Burke Scholarship can be used for participation on OHIO International Programs, Exchanges, and other approved study abroad programs. Program must be a  minimum of three (3) weeks  in length.

    Please reach out to the Office of Global Opportunities to make sure your program is eligible for this award. 

     

    Student Eligibility

    1. Must be an OHIO Resident

    2. Must be an undergraduate full-time, degree-seeking student from an Ohio International Consortium member school.

    3. Must be at least a rising sophomore.

    4. Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

    5. Preference is given to first-time study abroad applicants.

    Note: The selected student must be accepted into an accredited study abroad program that has been approved by the home school and r eturn to the home campus for at least one semester during which the follow-on project will be completed.

    Application Requirements

    1. Essay 1:  Upload a personal statement articulating your goals for your study abroad experience and how your selected program will help you attain them. Please also explain how the experience relates to your degree and career plans.

      The essay should be approximately 500 words and double spaced. Please use the following naming convention for the file: FirstnameLastnameEssay1 (e.g. JaneDoeEssay1).

    2. Essay 2:  Burke scholarship awardees are expected to complete a service project at their home university following their study abroad experience that helps to promote study abroad experiences and funding opportunities like the scholarships sponsored by the Ohio International Consortium. Please upload an essay outlining your service project. Be sure to articulate who your target audience is and how your project will impact this group.
