Environmental Science and Sustainability Bachelor's Degree

Environmental Science and Sustainability is a multi-disciplinary Bachelor of Science degree program that provides foundational environmental science in the context of the interplay of environment, economics and society that are at the core of sustainability. Students learn the scientific principles and social science frameworks underlying environmental and sustainability issues, the effects of human actions, and the public policies that influence those actions.

Careers with an Environmental Science and Sustainability Degree

Students who pursue this degree will be prepared for careers in environmental resource management, governmental and non-governmental agencies with a wide variety of roles from science to public policy, college and university sustainability programs, corporate sustainability and social governance, and sustainable entrepreneurship.

The Environmental Science and Sustainability program also prepares students for graduate studies in a variety of fields including sustainability studies and leadership, sustainable energy and food systems, environmental journalism, environmental law, and environmental studies including the Environmental Studies Master of Science at Ohio University.

Environmental Science and Sustainability Courses & Curriculum

The program is unique in its multi-disciplinary approach, drawing major requirements and electives from courses and expertise in 14 departments and programs across the College of Arts & Sciences, the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service, the Patton College of Education, the College of Business, and the College of Health Sciences and Professions.

Students complete a core curriculum from a range of disciplines to provide a broad foundation in environmental science and sustainability concepts and issues. Students choose major electives from a variety of departments to tailor the program to their personal and career interests.

Courses examine:

  • Biological and ecological systems
  • Physical Earth sciences where they intersect the environmental sciences
  • Global warming and effects of climate change
  • Land use and water management
  • Environmental and climate justice
  • Sustainability issues from local issues in Appalachia to problems at the global level
