College of Arts & Sciences Spirit Award Criteria

The College of Arts & Sciences Spirit Award recognizes alumni who have graduated within the last 15 years and whose accomplishments in one or more of three areas reflect the spirit, vitality, and high standards of the college.

The three areas are:

  • Loyalty and service to Ohio University, the College of Arts & Sciences, or the individual's academic department. This may include, but is not limited to, mentoring students and recent graduates by providing career guidance, job leads, or help in finding internships; staying in touch with faculty members in a way that helps maintain a bridge between the academic and business or professional worlds; returning to campus and participating in programs, events, meetings, or conferences sponsored by the College of Arts & Sciences or the individual?s academic department; helping in activities related to student recruitment; or organizing or participating in alumni activities in his or her community.
  • Professional Initiative. This category applies to individuals who have demonstrated the value and flexibility of a liberal arts education in their business, professional or entrepreneurial activities. It may include outstanding early or mid-career achievements, but the primary focus is on individuals who credit a broad and liberal education as sound preparation for the challenges and vicissitudes they have encountered along their career paths.
  • Community Service. This area includes demonstrated commitment to philanthropic activities, active involvement in volunteer work, or leadership and involvement in professional, community, or services organizations.
