Film Portfolios

Because the School of Film considers artistic talent in the review process, you must submit a portfolio for consideration to the program. Your portfolio also serves as your application for talent-based scholarships.

Portfolio Requirements

Students applying to the film major through the School of Film or the Honors Tutorial College are required to submit a creative sample, a personal statement and a resume.

The School of Film is open to students of all experience levels. We’re looking for creative potential and a willingness to explore new ways of storytelling. So whether you’ve won filmmaking awards or have never made a single film… we want to see your creative work! Think of your portfolio as an opportunity to showcase your creativity, interests and potential. We’re not looking for a polished, professional portfolio. We just want to see anything you’ve created – from films to written work to art projects to your unique creative pursuits. And if you don’t every component of the portfolio? Submit what you have!

• Creative sample - Choose one of the following portfolio options.
  • Portfolio option #1 - Provide 1-2 minutes of a moving image project (film/video, animation, theater, etc.)
  • Portfolio option #2 - Provide TWO of the following:
    • 3-5 pages of an original screenplay or stage play
    • 3-5 pages of academic creative prose
    • 10-15 still images of creative work (photography, sculpture, painting, drawing, production design/lighting for theater, etc.)
• Personal statement - Your personal statement should address each of the following. The recommended length is 500 words.
  • Describe your artistic influences
  • What areas interest you most about filmmaking?
  • What are your career aspirations in filmmaking?
• Creative resume - Your creative resume should highlight your filmmaking experience, artistic achievements and/or your creative work.
  • Your resume should provide insight into your creative background and demonstrative your passion for storytelling through film. (Don't have much filmmaking experience? That's okay! We want to see anything that showcases your creativity.)
  • You are encouraged to include interdisciplinary work that showcases creative practice across multiple fields.
  • Things you may consider including in your creative resume:
    • Film projects
    • Production roles
    • Festivals
    • Awards
    • Technical skills
    • Leadership experiences
    • Links to your portfolio, reel or other relevant media (Note: If you include links to external media, portfolio, websites, etc., you must ensure they are active, publicly accessible and do not require special permissions or login credentials to view.)

Submission

To submit your portfolio, you must first apply to OHIO and then log in to your applicant status portal to access the portfolio submission form. Please include the following information about each piece you submit. (This information can be added by selecting "edit details" after uploading your work.)

• Why you submitted this piece
