Ohio University Syllabus Guidelines: 2. Definitions
The following definitions provide clarity and consistency in how Ohio University interprets and applies statutory and policy requirements related to course syllabi and course policies and guidelines. These terms are intended to guide faculty, academic units, and administrators in meeting compliance obligations while supporting effective teaching and student success.
- Course Syllabus. As defined in Ohio Revised Code §3345.029, a course syllabus is a document produced by a course instructor that includes the instructor’s name, a calendar outlining topics and materials with anticipated timing, a list of required or recommended readings, the instructor’s professional qualifications, and a religious accommodations statement consistent with University Policy 40.003. Course syllabi constitute the public-facing information that Ohio University is required to make available in its centralized syllabus repository beginning in Fall 2026.
- Course Policies and Guidelines. Course policies and guidelines extend beyond the elements of the course syllabus to include additional information provided directly to enrolled students, typically through the University’s learning management system (LMS). These materials may include learning outcomes, grading policies, attendance and participation requirements, statements on academic misconduct, disability accommodations, and resources for student success. Together with the course syllabus, course policies and guidelines provide a comprehensive framework for communicating course expectations.
- Required Syllabus Components. The elements mandated by Ohio Revised Code §3345.029, which must appear in every course syllabus. These include instructor name, course calendar outlining topics and materials, required or recommended readings, instructor professional qualifications, and a religious accommodations statement.
- Required Course Policies and Guidelines Components. Additional elements, beyond those listed in the course syllabus, must be provided to students on or before the first day of class. These include core policies such as grading, attendance, absence accommodations, academic misconduct, and disability accommodations, consistent with university policies and federal requirements.
- Recommended Course Policies and Guidelines Components. Information that is not strictly mandated by law or University policy but strongly encouraged as best practice. Recommended components may include resources for student support, inclusive classroom practices, technology requirements, and caveat language about adjustments to course activities or readings. Incorporating these components enhances transparency, clarity, and inclusiveness in the student learning experience.
