The rise in online sport gaming has opened doors for entrepreneurs to turn their passion for the game into a career. Avid video game player and Ohio University student, Justyn Ferrell took hold of the opportunity to pursue a career in the industry through his multi-media gaming organization, Northern Forces. As the esports organization gained traction, Northern Forces now has over 100 members who interact through games such as Call of Duty, War Zone, Valorant, Apex Legends, and a variety of other competitive games. Streaming across Twitch, TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram Northern Forces has gained a community of viewers across the globe. After working his way up to ownership in February of 2017, Ferrell has set goals that he intends to surpass in the upcoming years.

The Bobcat Seed Fund has awarded Ferrell a $3,000 grant offered to Ohio University students seeking support for growing their businesses to give Northern Forces the advantage of eliminating the monetary barrier as well as setting their sights on becoming a well-known competitor. The organization is committed to providing quality entertainment to esports viewers, but also give back to their community. In 2021, Northern Forces raised $20,000 for charities and hope to hit their goals of $100,000 by 2023.

“In the future, I want to make sure that everyone in North gets paid, as well as maintain our great content and clothing and keep giving back,” Ferrell said.

As President of Northern Forces, Ferrell sets goals; however, he has a team of 10 managers, 90 creators, and 3 esports teams that carry out the vision. He constantly praises his team for their hard work and recognizes that working together is what makes the business possible.

“I learned by watching other people who have made it in the esports scene by getting advice from them and we’ve grown from there,” Ferrell said. “North management is a great community because they push me to be better and I push them to be better as well.”
