Biography

Rajko Grlić was born in 1947 in Zagreb, Croatia.

As director and scriptwriter, he worked on the following theatrical feature films:

  • 2016 - The Constitution

  • 2002 - Josephine
  • 2001 - Who Wants to Be A President (documentary, co-director)
  • 1991 - Charuga 
  • 1989 - That Summer of White Roses
  • 1986 - Three For Happiness
  • 1984 - In the Jaws of Life
  • 1981 - You Love Only Once 
  • 1978 - Bravo Maestro
  • 1974 - If It Kills Me 

Ten out of those twelve feature films have been premiered in competition at A-category film festivals, from Cannes on. These films were also shown in cinemas across all five continents and they have received numerous international awards.

He has worked on five feature films as a scriptwriter and on television series Reckless Years. He has produced five feature films, wrote and directed 16 short films and 14 documentaries for television.

He wrote, directed and produced How to Make Your MovieAn Interactive Film School, which was proclaimed the Best World Multi-media in 1998.

Grlić is Ohio Eminent Scholar in Film at Ohio University, Athens, OH, He has taught Film Direction and has delivered lectures and workshops at more than thirty universities in Europe, America and Asia. He is a member of the European Film Academy, of the Croatian Film Directors Association and the American Scriptwriters Association.

His work in film has received, among others, the North Macedonian Cinematheque Charter for Outstanding Contribution to European Film, Skopje, Nord Macedonia, Yugoslav Cinematheque Golden Seal, highest Serbian international award in cinema, for contribution to the European Cinema, Beograd, Serbia, Aleksandar Lifka award for outstanding contribution to the European film, Palic, Serbia, Vladimir Nazor life achievement award, Zagreb, Croatia, Life achievement award of the City of Denver, the title of honorary citizen of Montpellier, France, Doctor Honoris Causa, University of Nova Gorica, Slovenia.

His favorite wine is Mali Plavac red.
