Matthew Presutti

Matthew Presutti is a printmaker and papermaker whose work is rooted in the landscapes, labor, history and culture of southeastern Ohio. Growing up in a region shaped by generations of activism, industry and resilience, Presutti draws inspiration from the overlooked beauty and complicated history of Appalachian Ohio.

His artistic practice reflects a commitment to honoring the people and places that define the region while exploring sustainable approaches to print and papermaking.

Presutti received his BFA from Ohio University in 2006 and earned an MFA in Printmaking from the University of South Dakota in 2013. He currently lives in Athens, Ohio where he teaches a wide range of printmaking processes in the School of Art + Design at Ohio University. Over the past several years, his work has increasingly focused on creating handmade paper from locally sourced fibers, connecting material, process and place. Most recently, he founded the Ohio University Fiber and Dye Garden Experiment in collaboration with Ohio University’s Department of Environmental and Plant Biology. The project investigates the conditions necessary to cultivate high-quality papermaking fibers in southeastern Ohio, further reinforcing the relationship between regional ecology, sustainable materials, and contemporary printmaking.
