Biography

Dr. Elizabeth Hendrickson’s career demonstrates the value of combining a journalism and liberal arts education. She’s worked as a daily newspaper reporter, a network news producer and for nearly a decade, as a women’s magazine entertainment editor in New York City. What she brings to the classroom and academic community is an understanding of media dynamics and technology and unfailing optimism and curiosity about the continued evolution of journalism. To the occasional mortification of her two children, Elizabeth is willing to be the first to try something new, if that means she (and others) can learn from the experience.

Her undergraduate courses offered include the News and Information Capstone for Southeast Ohio magazine, Podcasting & Audio Journalism, Writing and Editing for Fashion Journalism, Magazine Editing and Production, Magazine Feature Writing and Media Business and the Future of Journalism. She is the co-creator and the journalism coordinator for the Podcasting Certificate. Her graduate courses include Case Study Methodology in Media Studies, Mass Media Ethics and Qualitative Research Methods in Journalism. She regularly works with students in the Honors Tutorial College and serves on many graduate student thesis committees.

Outside the classroom, Elizabeth is a judge for the National Magazine Awards and advises numerous student media, including the award-winning fashion publication, Thread. She also regularly reviews research manuscripts for the Newspaper Research Journal, the Journal of Computer Mediated Communication and the Journal of Magazine Media and is an active member of the Association of Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication’s Magazine Media Division. Her published research appears in the Journal of Magazine Media, Journalism Practice, Celebrity Studies and Journal of Social Semiotics, among others, and nearly always includes the terms mobile, digital, content, collaboration, organization, media and journalism.
