Biography
Eirene Binabiba is an Adjunct Instructor in the School of Media Arts & Studies at Ohio University's Scripps College of Communication. Her teaching and research sit at the intersection of digital media, representation, gender, global communication, and humanitarianism, with particular attention to how online platforms shape self-representation, public discourse, social mobilization, and crisis response.
Binabiba is a Ph.D. Candidate in Mass Communication and Media Arts at Ohio University. Her dissertation examines digital humanitarianism and the ways crisis-affected individuals use social media and other platforms to document their experiences, mobilize resources, shape public narratives, and reach global audiences directly. Her broader scholarship engages critical approaches to media and representation, gender and culture, social media activism, crisis communication, and questions of voice and power in networked spaces.
Her teaching draws equally on that research and on years of professional media work. At Ohio University, she has taught The Evolution of Media, Content Curation, and Advanced Social Media, and has supported instruction across social media, digital communication, and production courses. In the classroom, she works to connect critical theory to the platforms, industries, and everyday media experiences students already navigate.
Before and alongside academia, Binabiba built a career across strategic communication, television production, public relations, and nonprofit and social media strategy in Ghana and the United States. She is also the founder of the ENB Foundation, which partners with communities on education, empowerment, and humanitarian initiatives and works to amplify underrepresented voices and expand access to opportunity.
That combination of scholarly, professional, and community-based experience shapes her interest in helping students think critically about media while understanding how communication serves organizations, communities, and the public more broadly. Across her work, she brings an international and interdisciplinary lens to questions of voice, representation, and power, and to the ways digital media can both reinforce and unsettle existing social structures.
