Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences Major

A major in Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences (HSLS) at Ohio University ensures a well-rounded undergraduate education. Students develop skills and knowledge in scientific and humanistic areas, with a strong emphasis on communication abilities, scholarship, professionalism, service and multicultural engagement.

The curriculum integrates a sequence of interdisciplinary coursework with courses designed to provide a sound understanding of normal human communication processes and an introduction to speech-language pathology and audiology.

To earn a BSCSD, students must complete 27 semester hours of Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences coursework, as well as six to eight semester hours of specific courses in anthropology, biology, interpersonal communication, mathematics, physics or psychology.

Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences Minor

The minor in Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences fosters learning related to communication sciences and the normal processes of human communication. It will provide an introduction to communication disorders.

The field is inherently interdisciplinary; few academic or clinical realms are unrelated to communication sciences and disorders. Students wishing to pursue graduate studies in any clinical field can develop a good foundation through this minor.

Even those without professional interests related to communication disorders can benefit from an improved appreciation of issues related to a host of vital human communication issues that affect their everyday lives. Students considering graduate study in any OHIO Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences programs (master's in speech-language pathology or doctor of audiology) are encouraged to complete the minor and any additional prerequisites.
