OHIO Conservation Internship at Sabah National Park in Malaysia

The OHIO Conservation Internship at Sabah National Parks offers students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain hands-on experience in conservation, biodiversity research, and environmental management in one of the world’s most ecologically rich regions — home to lush rainforests, towering mountains, and vibrant marine ecosystems.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sabah National Parks serves as a living laboratory for conservation, biodiversity research, and sustainable environmental management, making it an ideal setting for hands-on learning.

Over six weeks, interns will work alongside Sabah Parks conservation staff, engaging in fieldwork, data collection, and species monitoring while learning firsthand about sustainable conservation efforts in Malaysia.

Whether you are interested in wildlife conservation, environmental policy, or ecological research, this immersive internship provides real-world experience in protecting and managing diverse ecosystems, from rainforests to marine parks.

June 1 – July 15 (six weeks, flexible)

Program Highlights

  • Field-Based Conservation Training – Work in Totally Protected Areas (TPAs) such as Kinabalu Park, Crocker Range, Pulau Tiga, and Turtle Islands. Learn practical conservation strategies used to sustain species and habitats.
  • Hands-On Research – Participate in biodiversity surveys, habitat monitoring, and species identification, developing skills in taxonomy, field ecology, and GIS mapping.
  • Community Engagement – Gain insights into community-based conservation and work with local stakeholders to promote sustainable environmental practices.

Venues and Logistics

Interns will be based at Sabah Parks’ facilities, rotating between protected rainforest and marine ecosystems. Accommodation will be provided in staff quarters or hostels with electricity, ceiling fans, and basic amenities. Meals will be arranged through the program, with dietary accommodations available.

Travel and Transportation

  • Flights: Round-trip flight from Columbus to Kota Kinabalu
  • Accommodation: Provided at Sabah Parks staff quarters.
  • Transportation: Covered for fieldwork and program activities.
  • Connectivity: Mobile and internet access are available, but interns are encouraged to limit online activity and fully engage in the experience.

Entry and Exit Requirements

  • Visa: U.S. citizens do not require a visa for stays under 90 days for academic purposes.
  • Passport: Must be valid for at least six months beyond the program end date.
  • Health and Safety: Interns should be up to date on routine vaccinations and carry any necessary medications.
  • Cultural Awareness: Interns should respect local customs, dress modestly in field settings, and avoid political discussions on social media.

Applicant Qualifications

This internship is ideal for undergraduate or graduate students in environmental science, biology, sustainability, international studies, or related fields. Applicants should have:

  • A strong interest in conservation and ecological research.
  • The ability to adapt to remote field conditions and work in tropical environments.
  • A willingness to learn and collaborate with local communities and conservation professionals.
  • Basic technical skills such as data collection, mapping (GPS/GIS), and scientific analysis (preferred but not required).
  • The ability to work in team-oriented fieldwork settings with a positive attitude.

Students must complete Elementary Malay I and II during the academic year prior to departure to prepare for language and cultural engagement.

Costs

The Sabah National Parks Summer Internship is designed as an affordable international experience, with several major expenses provided by Sabah Parks.

  • Program Fee: None.
  • Airfare: Estimated round-trip airfare from Columbus to Kota Kinabalu is $2,100–$3,100.
  • Housing: Provided by Sabah Parks.
  • Meals: A daily food allowance of approximately $25 per person is provided. Students should budget for any additional meals, snacks, and personal dining expenses.
  • Local Transportation: Provided by Sabah Parks for internship-related activities.
  • Travel Insurance: Provided by Ohio University.
  • Personal Expenses: Students should budget for personal items, incidental expenses, and optional excursions.

Award Support

  • SISAL provides a $2,500 scholarship to participating interns.
