Responding to Student Problems: Emergency/Crisis
Crises
Students' educational experiences are sometimes interrupted by significant personal crises. These include:
- the death of a family member including parent, sibling, or other
- the death of a fellow student
- a serious personal injury or illness including mental illness
The circumstances surrounding any of these incidents can exacerbate the effect felt by the student. For example, a death caused by a suicide will affect most students differently than the passing of an aged grandparent. The death or serious injury to a roommate will affect them differently that an injury to a friend or acquaintance.
The Office of the Dean of Students generally coordinates the University response to student crises. This includes making contact with parents when appropriate, coordinating support services to meet the particular needs of students, and coordinating support to students who are affected by another student’s crisis. If you become aware of a student crisis, please call the Office of the Dean of Students, (740) 593-1800.
Depending upon the circumstances, faculty may receive written or telephone communication from the Office of the Dean of Students or from the Dean’s office of the college in which the student is enrolled (this is usually handled by the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs/Services). Such communication may ask for your consideration in response to a student’s particular circumstance, and is initiated only in the most serious of situations.
Emergency
If you have a medical or other type of emergency, call 911.
If you have a situation with a student (in your class, your office or elsewhere) that requires a response, call the Ohio University Police at 740.593.1911.
If you have a situation with a student that is not emergency and you are uncertain how to respond, contact the Office of the Dean of Students at 740.593.1800.
