The Athena Cinema’s eleventh annual Holiday Film Series and Canned Food Drive will bring Christmas Classics to the big screen, only this year in a new setting.
The 2023-2024 season of “The Met: Live in HD” has now been added to The Athena Cinema’s schedule of screenings taking place at The Ridges Auditorium.
The “From the Hills and Hollers: Appalachian Stories” film series will be shown with free admission, with events running from Sept 14, 2023 to April 18, 2024 in various locations.
Athena Cinema staff will continue working in the building throughout fall semester, and the front portion of the building is anticipated to remain open for regular lobby hours and sidewalk sales. Additionally, both local businesses located at 20 South Court St. will continue to maintain their regular operations.
This summer, everyone across the Athens community is invited to stay cool, enjoy delicious concessions treats and engage in the timeless tradition of watching movies on the big screen.
The closure, which impacts all three theater spaces and is tentatively planned to extend through the summer, comes after a recent building inspection identified some potential structural maintenance needs within the 108-year-old theater space.

First-year MFA filmmakers screen films on topics such as identity, family, freedom, grief, coming-of-age and more at the Athena Cinema on Oct 1.
The Athena Cinema series continues on select Saturdays, featuring 10 performances transmitted live from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.
