What is the Advanced Standing MSW? 

The Advanced Standing MSW is an accelerated track that grants academic credit for the generalist social work training you already completed in a CSWE-accredited BSW program, allowing you to move directly into advanced coursework instead of repeating foundational classes. 

To understand its value, it helps to compare it with our standard Foundation MSW track. 

The Foundation MSW track is built for students coming from non-social work backgrounds, such as psychology, sociology, criminal justice, or communications. Because these students have not completed formal undergraduate social work training, the first half of their graduate program covers broad, foundational concepts alongside an introductory field practicum. At Ohio University, this track spans 17 courses (62 credit hours) and can be completed in as few as 10 semesters (about 3.3 years, or 40 months). 

The Advanced Standing MSW track, by contrast, recognizes the academic rigor and supervised field hours you already completed during your CSWE-accredited undergraduate degree. By granting credit for your prior generalist training, we allow you to skip foundational classes and move directly into advanced clinical practice, diagnostic assessment, and evidence-based interventions in just 10 courses (36 credit hours).

Who qualifies for Ohio University's Advanced Standing MSW? 

Because Advanced Standing students enter directly into upper-level graduate work and clinical field placements, we maintain clear eligibility criteria to make sure candidates are prepared for advanced practice. To qualify for the online Advanced Standing MSW track, applicants must meet the following requirements: 

• CSWE-accredited BSW degree: You must hold a Bachelor of Social Work degree conferred within the last seven years from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). 

• U.S. residency: The online MSW program currently accepts applicants residing within the United States. International students seeking on-campus study can apply to our Athens hybrid program instead. 

• No GRE or GMAT required: We do not require graduate entrance exam scores for admission, and GRE/GMAT scores are not reviewed as part of the application process. 

• Standard graduate application: You will need to submit official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions, a professional resume, and a personal statement outlining your professional career goals in social work practice. 

If you earned your BSW more than seven years ago, or you hold a bachelor's degree in another field, you still qualify for admission into our 62-credit Foundation MSW track. 

How much time does Advanced Standing save? 

Enrolling in the Advanced Standing program saves you 26 credit hours and 7 full graduate courses compared to the Foundation track. Translated into real-world time, that is a reduction of 4 full semesters, or about 16 months. 

• Foundation track: Up to 10 semesters, or about 3.3 years (40 months) 

• Advanced Standing track: 6 semesters, or 2 years (24 months) 

Our online MSW is structured as a flexible, part-time program designed for working adults. Advanced Standing students take one practice course per semester alongside their field work, completing all degree requirements in six semesters. Compared with the 10-semester Foundation track, Advanced Standing eliminates about 16 months of study. 

Streamlined field practicum hours 

While Foundation students complete two separate field placements across their program, Advanced Standing students complete only one Advanced/Clinical Practicum. 

• 10 hours per week: Field work is completed at a manageable pace of 10 hours per week (140 hours per semester across 4 semesters) at a single agency in your local area. 

• Evening and weekend options: Practicum hours can sometimes be completed outside standard business hours if the partner agency permits, giving you flexibility around current job commitments. 

• Workplace practicum consideration: Students who wish to complete their Advanced Clinical Practicum at their current employer may request to do so, but approval is not automatic. Requests are reviewed case by case by our field education team, and the proposed activities must reflect new, advanced-level learning aligned with CSWE competencies rather than a continuation of your regular job duties. 

How much money does Advanced Standing save? 

The financial benefits of choosing our Advanced Standing MSW combine direct tuition savings with an earlier start to higher clinical earning potential. 

By completing 36 credit hours instead of 62, you eliminate about 42 percent of the total credits required in the Foundation track. That directly lowers your investment in:
