Engineering Technology

With Intel’s new operations in Central Ohio and an increased demand from area manufactures like Mid West Fabricating, TS Tech America, Nifco, Magna Seating and THK, the need for local professionals with two-year degrees in STEM will only increase. The semiconductor industry directly employs nearly a quarter of a million workers in the U.S., with a current shortage of skilled workers to meet production demands.

The Engineering Technology program at Ohio University Lancaster was created to meet the rising demand for skilled technicians and engineering technologists. Students are guided through real-world applications with hands-on lab courses to ensure they have the technical foundation needed to pursue a successful career in engineering. They are also taught a variety of manufacturing processes and skilled in quality analysis tools, occupational safety, and electronics. A large focus within the program is on the importance of automated equipment including computer numerical control (CNC) equipment, programmable logic controllers (PLC’s) and robotic systems.

    Potential Careers

    Students have a wide variety of career opportunities through the engineering technology associate degree. With much of the program’s focus on automation, this degree prepares students as electrical technicians, programmable logic controllers (PLC’s) technicians, and CNC and quality technicians. Graduates may work for manufacturers or field service providers to setup and troubleshoot sensors, automated equipment, and robots to ensure productivity.

    • As of 2024, industrial engineering technologists and technicians earn an annual median wage of $61,210.
    • Intel is projected to bring roughly 3,000 engineering technology jobs to central Ohio by 2025.
    • About 70 percent of Intel jobs in Central Ohio will be technician roles, requiring just an associate degree.

    Learning Environment

    Most Engineering Technology major classes are held in the Fairfield County Workforce Center (FCWC). The Center is home to the latest advanced technology, including industrial robots, robotic vision systems, programmable logic controllers, mechatronic trainers and other advanced manufacturing equipment.

Program Admission Requirements

First-Year Students

Anyone who holds a high school diploma or has a GED certificate is eligible for admission to any Ohio University regional campus. Regional campuses have a rolling admissions policy which means that students may be admitted anytime during the year. Applicants will be accepted until class begins each semester. However, prospective students are advised to begin the application process as soon as possible so that they may be given important dates and deadlines in a timely manner. Freshmen applicants are encouraged to complete an online application for enrollment.

Transfer Students

You are a transfer applicant if you have completed nine or more semester (12 quarter) hours at another institution after you graduated from high school. If you have completed fewer than nine semester hours, you will apply as a freshman applicant. To apply as a transfer student, applicants are encouraged to complete an online application for enrollment.
