Student presents research

Tiyana Ross
April 16, 2020

Tiyana Ross, a recent graduate of Ohio University’s nursing program, completed a research project while in the final stages of earning her degree. Tiyana was granted an Undergraduate Experiential Learning Award to present her research in the form of a poster at a professional conference in spring 2020. Tiyana’s project was entitled “Gen Z: Life Savers”.

The project’s purpose was to explain how to ultimately help save a life of someone who has overdosed on an opioid by administering naloxone (Narcan). Tiyana chose this research topic because she was aware of the increase in recreational opioid usage on college campuses.

Tiyana widely expanded on the background of this topic with support from other research and noted the specific aims of the project, one of which was to understand the perceptions of students and note their level of awareness of opioid misuse. Through visuals, she explained the development of technology that is used to assist those who overdosed on opioids.

For her research methods, Tiyana conducted a qualitative study using a combination of focus groups and semi-structured interviews. Her poster included an explanation of how she plans to further her research and the research methods that would be most effective in the next phase of her study.
