First Year Camera and Lighting Workshop

First Year Camera and Lighting Workshop

Mar 26, 2013

Camera and Lighting Workshop

After completing their first short films (Film I) using only 16mm Arriflex S film cameras and naturally-lit exterior scenes, the first year MFA students finally get their first taste of film lighting techniques during the program's annual three-day introductory lighting workshop.

An intensive, weekend-long seminar, the lighting workshop introduces first year students to the methodology of creative lighting design and the practice of film gaffing. They were also instructed on shooting 16mm film using the Arriflex SR Sync Sound Cameras--the tool which will be the cornerstone for their second-semester Film II projects.

For the workshop's capstone assignment, students are placed into groups and issued a space, a scenario, and a basic lighting kit with which they have three hours to block a shot, light it, and then film it using the Arriflex. The projects are screened the following week after being developed at an off-site film lab.
