Student Bereavement
Experiencing the death of a family member or loved one can be incredibly difficult, and students are encouraged to seek support and communicate their needs during this time. If you experience the loss of a loved one and need time away from class or other considerations for assignments/deadlines/etc., you should reach out directly to your faculty to discuss. Faculty members may request documentation, such as a copy of the obituary, when considering requests related to missed coursework or class absences, and ultimately it is up to each faculty member how they handle student bereavement leave within the scope of their syllabus.
Students may find support through a variety of campus resources during this time, including emotional, academic, and general support services.
Ohio University Counseling and Psychological Services offers individual counseling, same-day drop-in appointments, crisis support, group counseling, and referrals for students coping with grief and loss. Students can call 740-593-1616 or visit the Hudson Health Center to get connected with support.
Academic Success Advisors can help students navigate academic concerns during periods of grief, including discussing class schedules and identifying academic support options.
The Ohio University Dean of Students Office can help answer questions and connect students with additional campus resources by emailing deanofstudents@ohio.edu or calling 740-593-1800.
