Communication Resource Center (CRC)

Housed in Schoonover 030, the Communication Resource Center (CRC) is a space where COMS 1030 students can make appointments with Peer Leaders to get support throughout the public speaking process. Peer Leaders are undergraduate students who have taken and excelled in COMS 1030 and been given additional training.

Peer Leaders at the CRC can help students with:

  • Brainstorming and selecting a topic

  • Searching for credible sources
  • Organizing the body of the speech
  • Crafting a strong attention getter
  • Drawing compelling conclusions
  • Generating effective transitions
  • Establishing (and maintaining) credibility
  • Learning how to properly cite and reference sources
  • Incorporating vivid language to strengthen the speech
  • Manufacturing or finding powerful visual aids
  • Developing delivery skills
  • Managing speech anxiety
  • Giving general feedback on speeches

Each semester, COMS 1030 Instructors will share the operating dates for the CRC.

Appointments at the CRC are generally 15-20 minutes long, at the end of which the student will be given a receipt for their appointment. Notice of their appointment will also be given to their COMS 1030 instructor, who will input their 30 points of course credit.
