Ohio University’s Sigma Delta Pi Chapter named an “Honor Chapter” for ninth consecutive year

Ohio University’s Pi Rho/Tau of Ohio Chapter of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society has been named an “Honor Chapter” for its outstanding activities during the 2025-26 academic year.

This is the ninth consecutive year that the Ohio University chapter has received this award. The honor was bestowed to only 12 chapters nationwide in 2026.

According to the National Executive Committee, Esther Hernández Esteban, Ohio University's chapter advisor and assistant professor of instruction in Modern Languages, was instrumental in earning this national recognition as well.

“We are honored to receive this distinction for the ninth consecutive year. Our student officers work incredibly hard throughout the year to create events that engage students at Ohio University and the local community,” Hernández Esteban said. “It is very rewarding to see their efforts recognized in this distinction, and it encourages us to continue organizing more events that are free and open to all. We are very excited for the upcoming academic year and the many events we have planned to celebrate excellence in the study of the Spanish language and foster cultural understanding.”

Each summer, the 640 chapters of Sigma Delta Pi nationwide are asked to submit an annual report detailing their numerous activities and projects from the academic year. Based on these reports, the National Executive Committee chooses approximately 10-15 “Honor Chapters” annually. This recognition is based upon the caliber of chapter projects that reflect the Sigma Delta Pi mission of honoring excellence in the study of the Spanish language, contributing to cultural understanding and upholding the goals of the society.

Founded in 1919 and with its national office at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, Sigma Delta Pi is also a member since 1966 of the Association of College Honor Societies, the nation’s only certifying agency for college and university honor societies.
