Ohio University receives state approval for restructured academic programs

Ohio University has received approval from the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) and the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) for its proposed plans to restructure select academic programs in compliance with the Advance Ohio Higher Education Act (AOHEA). These approvals finalize the proposed program mergers the University had previously announced in June 2026, completing the state’s review process and allowing each new academic program structure to move forward this fall.  

The newly approved programs also ensure compliance with AOHEA's low degree conferral requirements while preserving academic opportunities for students through broader, more integrated degree pathways. 

As previously shared, students who enrolled in any of the affected programs during the summer 2026 term or earlier will be able to complete their degree requirements as outlined in the Undergraduate Catalog. 

The approved degree programs and concentrations include: 

Bachelor of Music in Music 

Students may complete the Bachelor of Music in Music with options to pursue one of the following concentrations: 

  • Instrumental Performance 
  • Popular Music Performance (formerly Contemporary Music and Digital Instruments) 
  • Composition 
  • Organ Performance 
  • Piano Performance 
  • Piano Pedagogy 
  • Voice Performance 

The University will continue to offer the Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education – Choral Emphasis and Music Education – Instrumental Emphasis. 

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater 

Students may complete the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater with options to pursue one of the following concentrations: 

  • Playwriting 
  • Production Design and Technology 
  • Stage Management 

The University will continue to offer the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theater Performance with Acting and Musical Theater tracks. 

Bachelor of Arts in Art 

Students will select from the following concentrations: 

  • Art History 
  • Studio Art 

The University will continue to offer Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Studio Art, Graphic Design and Interior Architecture. 

Bachelor of Arts in Classics and Religious Studies 

The newly approved Bachelor of Arts in Classics and Religious Studies combines three degree programs, including religious studies, classical civilization and classical languages, into a single degree program.  

New and returning students with questions about these academic programs are encouraged to contact their academic advisor for additional information and guidance.
