Ohio University names John McCarthy Interim Executive Vice President and Provost
Ohio University announced today that John McCarthy has been named Interim Executive Vice President and Provost, following Don Leo’s announcement that he will step down to assume the role of President of The University of Alabama in Huntsville, effective June 1.
McCarthy currently serves as dean of Ohio University’s College of Health Sciences and Professions (CHSP), where he is widely recognized as a collaborative and trusted leader, known for fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation and student success across a complex academic enterprise. He began his career at Ohio University as a member of the CHSP faculty in 2004 and served in various administrative roles before assuming leadership of CHSP in 2021.
“John brings deep institutional knowledge and a proven record of inclusive leadership,” said Ohio University President Lori Stewart Gonzalez. “His experience leading one of the nation’s premier health education colleges positions him exceptionally well to guide Ohio University’s academic mission during this transition.”
Provost Don Leo departs the role following a tenure marked by meaningful progress. Leo successfully implemented the University’s Dynamic Strategy, helping to advance academic quality, operational effectiveness and long-term sustainability. He also led the significant and complex work required to implement institutional changes associated with the Advance Ohio Higher Education Act, an undertaking that required extensive coordination and campuswide engagement.
“Don Leo’s leadership helped to strengthen our institution during a period of substantial change,” said President Gonzalez. “We are grateful for his service and wish him continued success as he begins his presidency at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.”
As Interim Executive Vice President and Provost, McCarthy will oversee Ohio University’s academic enterprise and continue working closely with faculty, staff and students to advance institutional priorities.
Additional information regarding this leadership transition will be shared with the University community as it becomes available.
