OHIO names Dr. Aimee Edmondson interim dean of Scripps College of Communication

Dr. Aimee Edmondson has been named interim dean of the Scripps College of Communication, effective July 1, 2026.

Interim Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. John McCarthy announced that Edmondson will move into the interim dean position following Dean Dr. Scott Titsworth’s decision to step away from the role. Titsworth, who has served as dean since 2010, will return to teaching after a yearlong Faculty Fellowship Leave.

Edmondson, who first joined Ohio University as an assistant professor in 2008, currently serves as the associate dean of the Scripps College of Communication and professor in media law and journalism history. She previously served as the associate director for graduate studies for the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism from 2018-2024.

“Dr. Aimee Edmondson brings extensive experience in journalism and communications to this position, in addition to her highly respected work as a leader and faculty member in the Scripps College of Communication,” McCarthy said. “I am grateful she has agreed to serve as interim dean during this important time, and I look forward to working with her.”

Edmondson has received numerous honors for work, including being awarded the American Journalism Historian Association’s Best Article Award in 2021 and being named OHIO’s Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award recipient in 2014. In addition, Edmondson has received numerous national and regional awards for her journalism work, including the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism in 2006 and the Green Eyeshade Excellence in Journalism Award in 2006.

She is the author of the book, “In Sullivan’s Shadow, The Use and Abuse of Libel Law During the Long Civil Rights Struggle,” and has been widely published in a range of journals and publications.

Edmondson earned her Ph.D. from the University of Missouri School of Journalism (2008), Master of Arts from the University of Memphis (1999) and Bachelor of Arts from the Louisiana State University Manship School of Journalism (1990).

“I am deeply honored to be entrusted with this role as the national search for a permanent dean moves forward. Scripps College has long been my home, and I continue to be inspired by the extraordinary faculty, staff, students and alumni who make this community so exceptional,” Edmondson said.

“I look forward to building on the strong momentum established by Dean Titsworth and to helping ensure that Scripps continues to rise to even greater prominence on the national and international stage,” Edmondson said. “I am committed to leading with honesty, listening with empathy, and collaborating with energy and purpose alongside our partners across campus and throughout our broader community — locally and globally.”
