From inspired student to future educator: OHIO Eastern student's journey comes full circle

For Lacey Dobson, the path to becoming an educator began in a classroom not far from where she hopes to one day teach.

Inspired by her own teachers at Martins Ferry Elementary, Dobson discovered early on that education was more than a career choice. It was a calling shaped by the care and encouragement she experienced as a student.

“I was inspired to pursue a career in education by my former elementary teachers at Martins Ferry Elementary,” Dobson said. “They demonstrated a passion for helping students succeed inside and outside the classroom. They inspired me to be an educator.” 

Set to graduate this semester from Ohio University Eastern, Dobson has spent the past several years turning that inspiration into action, gaining hands-on experience and building strong connections within her community.

One of the most meaningful aspects of her time at OHIO Eastern was the opportunity to make a direct impact close to home.

“The most rewarding part of my journey as an education student at OHIO Eastern was being able to make an impact on education in my local community,” she said. “I was able to make great friendships throughout my journey in the education program, and the professors truly care about your success and journey.”

Through field placements in local school districts, Dobson strengthened her passion for teaching while developing relationships with students, educators and mentors. Those experiences helped shape her approach to education and affirmed her desire to remain rooted in the community that helped shape her. 

Kimberly Ciroli, associate professor of early childhood and elementary education, said Dobson’s commitment to her students and her craft sets her apart.

“Lacey Dobson exemplifies the heart, skill and professionalism essential to transformative teaching,” Ciroli said. “She demonstrates a strong understanding of child development and evidence-based instructional practices, thoughtfully designing learning experiences that are engaging, inclusive and developmentally appropriate.”

“She consistently brings creativity and strong instructional instincts into her classroom experiences,” she said. “She builds meaningful relationships that foster a sense of belonging for every student.” 

“In her field placements and classroom settings, Lacey represents OHIO and the Patton College of Education with poise, creativity and strong instructional instincts,” Ciroli said. “She builds warm, respectful relationships with children and families, fostering learning environments where every child feels seen, valued and capable.”

Dobson credits much of her growth to the support systems she embraced during her time as a student, including academic resources that helped her build confidence early in her college career. 

“One piece of advice I would give to future education students would be to never be afraid to ask for help and guidance,” she said. “During my freshman year, I had a tutor for math and biology. Asking for help improved my overall confidence and academics. I am so grateful that OHIO Eastern has this resource.”

Her journey has also been shaped by influential mentors, including Joe Mamone, who served as her principal throughout both elementary and high school.

“He continuously showed that he cared about students’ success not only in academics but in all aspects of life,” Dobson said. “He inspired me throughout my years at Martins Ferry to become an educator, and I hope to be half the teacher that he is.”

As graduation approaches, Dobson is focused on achieving a long-held goal.

“My plan after graduation includes securing a teaching position in my local community,” she said. “It has always been a dream of mine to have my own classroom and help students reach their goals.”

With a strong foundation built on mentorship, community connections and a passion for student success, Dobson is preparing to step into the classroom ready to inspire the next generation, just as her teachers once inspired her.
