Academic support continues through summer session

As Ohio University continues to deliver all classes on all campuses through remote and online instruction through the summer in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, academic support services also continue remotely and online through summer semester. Professional and student staff from the Academic Achievement Center (AAC) are available to help students succeed in their studies. Students can access remote tutoring, college study skills coaching, supplemental instruction and more through the Keep-Learning website.

From tutoring to reinforcing good study habits, the AAC helps students overcome difficulties they might have with coursework and collaborates with them in managing the challenges of academic life.

“Studies show that students who seek academic assistance tend to perform better in their classes and retain more information,” said Director of Academic Assistance Elizabeth Fallon. “Along with the shift to online instruction, our academic assistance has shifted to an online model as well.”

Students can access the following services through the AAC:

  • Peer Tutoring
Schedule an appointment with our peer tutors who have expertise in many Ohio University courses. Once you make an appointment, your tutor will email you with a link to your tutoring appointment, which will be a Teams meeting. You and your tutor will be able to use chat, audio and/or video features, share documents, and work together on the whiteboard.
  • Student Writing Center Tutoring
The Student Writing Center peer tutors can help at any stage of the writing process from discussing and organizing ideas to polishing a final draft. Writing tutors will not edit papers but will guide students in improving their writing strategies.
  • College Study Skills Coaching
Qualified coaches collaborate with students to help them recognize what it takes to reach their full academic potential and to equip them with the strategies, supportive partnership, and personal accountability necessary to achieve academic success.
  • Online Learning Navigation
Students familiar with remote learning will help their peers navigate and succeed in the online educational environment. Students can call on these navigators to help them master online course organization, managing assignment details, finding helpful resources, and understanding the technology required to complete assignments.

The students who serve as tutors, coaches, and navigators are experts in their fields. They are trained and eager to share their knowledge and proven techniques to help all Bobcats succeed. Tutors are available for many summer courses including biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, English, math, Spanish, and others.

Summer session academic assistance is available through the AAC Sundays-Thursdays from 2-8 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and other days and times upon request. Students can access academic assistance through the  AAC by making an appointment online through TutorTrac or by calling the AAC at 740-566-8888.

Allen Student Advising Center (ASAC) staff are also available through the summer to provide students support with many academic questions and concern. The Allen Center’s skilled professional advisors can help students explore their strengths and interests and construct academic plans that help them meet their goals. ASAC advisors can help students who want to improve their academic performance, work on degree planning, enroll in courses, or explore major changes.

“Allen Center Advisors are major exploration experts and there’s no time like summer for students to put in the effort required to explore their academic strengths, interests, and options,” said Allen Center Director Angela Lash. “Exploring majors is a process that takes time. It can be overwhelming to navigate that process on your own, which is exactly why Allen Center Advisors are here to guide students through the process.”

Allen Center advisors are available over the summer for virtual drop-in advising, Monday through Thursday from 1-3 p.m., and for scheduled phone/video appointments Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Find information about accessing virtual drops-ins and scheduling virtual appointments  at https://www.ohio.edu/uc/advising-center.
