Sociology B.A.
Honors Tutorial College Program

Sociology Major

The Honors Tutorial College Bachelor of Arts program in sociology offers exceptional students an intensive and individualized education focused on understanding social structures, institutions, and human behavior. Sociology uses systematic, scientific methods to examine how societies function and how social forces—such as inequality, culture, organizations, and technology—shape people’s lives. Through close faculty mentorship and advanced coursework, students develop strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills while exploring issues such as crime, discrimination, poverty, social change, and social justice. The program prepares students for graduate study, law school, and a wide range of professional opportunities.

Curriculum

Students must complete at least 120 credit hours, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5, and fulfill all university and Honors Tutorial College requirements.

The curriculum includes:

  • Eight sociology tutorials completed across four years, including two senior-level thesis tutorials
  • Core tutorials in sociological theory, research methods, and foundational areas of the discipline
  • Topical tutorials exploring subfields such as social inequality, gender, crime and deviance, social change, and technology
  • Collateral coursework supporting interdisciplinary study in the social sciences, humanities, or natural sciences
  • University writing, quantitative reasoning, and Honors Tutorial College seminar requirements

Honors Tutorials and Thesis

Students complete eight sociology tutorials, including two senior-level tutorials devoted to the honors thesis. Tutorials meet weekly in a one-on-one or small-group format and emphasize advanced reading, discussion, writing, and independent inquiry.

Early tutorials introduce students to core areas of sociology, including theory and research methods, while advanced tutorials allow students to pursue specialized topics aligned with their interests. The senior honors thesis represents original sociological research completed under the close supervision of a faculty advisor and must be approved by the advisor, Director of Studies, and Dean of the Honors Tutorial College.

Research and Experiential Learning

Students are encouraged to incorporate original research, internships, and study abroad experiences into their academic programs with the approval of the Director of Studies. Sociological research may involve surveys, interviews, observation, or analysis of social data and often addresses real-world social problems at local, national, or international levels.
