Programs of Study

The Honors Tutorial College offers more than 30 challenging programs of study that include a one-on-one or small-group tutorial each semester. Using a student-centered approach, the programs emphasize independent research and creative activity.

Anthropology studies the human species as a whole and requires an interdisciplinary emphasis.

Art History
Art History examines material objects and visual culture from a historical perspective.

Biological Sciences
Biological Sciences studies life and its component parts, from molecules to cells to ecosystems.

Business Administration
Business Administration combines a rigorous foundation in key business skills with an emphasis on innovation to prepare students for the complex, global economy.

Chemistry examines matter, energy, and their interaction. Biochemistry focuses on the chemistry of living organisms.

Classics and Religious Studies 
Classics provides the linguistic and archaeological training for expert study of Greek and Roman antiquity.

Communication Studies
Communication Studies draws from the liberal arts tradition and a variety of pre-professional contexts to explore human communication in messages, relationships, and culture.

Dance combines daily technique classes with broad study in dance composition, pedagogy, history, cultural studies, movement analysis, production, performance, and scholarship.

Economics studies decision-making and trade-offs responding to incentives and scarcity with applications in every sector of society including household consumption, firm production and structure, health care provision, energy use, environmental protection, finance, altruism, creativity and innovation, worker productivity, economic development, and the macroeconomy.

Engineering Physics combines a deep understanding of fundamentals with an orientation toward applications.

English encompasses literary periods and genres, rhetoric and composition, creative writing, and methodology.

Environmental & Plant Biology
Environmental and Plant Biology covers environmental, plant, and cell/molecular biology, as well as field ecology.

Environmental Studies
Environmental Studies is the interdisciplinary study of the biophysical environment and the complex interactions among humans, other organisms, and the environment.

Film combines a broad background in the liberal arts with professional study in film, including production and criticism.

Geography studies the interrelationships between humans and their environment, including the physical environment, the built environment, and socially constructed spaces.

Geological Sciences
Geological Sciences deals with the earth's physical structure and substance.

Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences
Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences offers individualized training in the hearing, speech and language sciences for a clinical or research career.

History examines the people, ideas, conflicts, and traditions that shape past and present societies.

Journalism focuses on the creation and theoretical understanding of news, information, and strategic communication.

Mathematics involves abstract quantitative thinking.

Media Arts & Studies
Media Arts and Studies focuses on musical, video and videogame development and production, as well as on media and social change.

Music focuses on education, performance, composition, theory and history.

Philosophy examines the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods.

Physics begins with classical and modern fundamentals that leads to deeper study in quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, nuclear and elementary particle physics, or condensed matter physics.

Political Science
Political Science covers political systems and actors in a variety of interdisciplinary contexts.

Social Work
Social Work explores evidence-based clinical practices and social welfare issues and policies within an interdisciplinary framework.
