Honors Tutorial College Program

History Major

Program Overview

The Honors Tutorial College program in History offers exceptional students the opportunity to study the discipline in depth through a combination of traditional coursework, individualized tutorials, and guided research. Students engage directly with faculty experts in one-on-one tutorials that promote critical analysis, advanced writing, and original interpretation of historical topics.

The program encourages intellectual independence and flexibility: students shape their studies around their interests while gaining a sophisticated understanding of historical methods, global perspectives, and the ethical practices of the discipline. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Honors Tutorial College and are exceptionally well prepared for graduate study or professional fields that demand strong analytical, research, and communication skills.

Curriculum

Students must complete at least 120 credit hours, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5, and fulfill all university and HTC requirements.

Honors Tutorials and Thesis

The senior thesis reflects the student’s own historical interests and must demonstrate original research, critical interpretation, and high-level scholarly analysis. Thesis work is guided by an advisor and evaluated by a committee consisting of the advisor and the Director of Studies.

Students complete eight tutorials within the History program, including two senior-year tutorials devoted to the thesis. Tutorials during the first three years are typically 3 credit hours and include study in U.S., World, and European history.

A typical tutorial meets weekly for in-depth discussion of readings, analysis of written work, and close intellectual engagement between student and tutor.

Internships or study abroad may be included with approval from the Director of Studies. Honors Tutorial students take a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester (12 in the final semester).
