Class Notes: School of Music

Rudi Schnitzler (M.F.A. 1967) received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina Charleston, and was a musicologist at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. He is now retired.

Steven Calantropio (M.F.A. 1973) organized the American Center for Elemental Music and Movement in 2012, a charitable organization dedicated to supporting elemental movement and music in America’s schools and communities. Steven taught music and movement to elementary school aged children for 31 years with the River Edge, New Jersey public school system before retiring in 2004.

William Meckley (M.M. 1981) conducted and produced the new CD “Out Of The Mist” by the Empire Jazz Orchestra. The sixth recording released by this professional jazz repertory ensemble, features music of Clare Fischer, Lee Morgan, Chick Corea, Duke Pearson and original compositions by members of the orchestra. It also features the premiere recording of Johnny Richards’ 1967 composition, “Out of the Mist.”

Yoonsook Song (M.M. 2014) won second prize in the piano competition category of the 2016 Salzburg Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition, which led to a performance in Salzburg, Austria this summer. Song and her duo partner Soojung Jeon won first prize in the 2016 Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition, their recital was held in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in May.

Ahmad Munir Mahzair (M.M. 2014) is serving as a lecturer of music at Universiti Teknologi MARA (Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia), and performs with the Moon Air Quartet.

Liguang Zhou (M.M. 2015) was selected as a first prize winner of the 2015 American Protégé International Competition. Mr. Zhou made his Carnegie Hall debut as a winner of the competition. He is currently pursuing the D.M.A. in Piano Performance at the Ohio State University.

Sarah Welch (2016), recent School of Music and Honors Tutorial College alumna, presented her research at the Performing Arts Medicine Association's annual international symposium in New York. Sarah began law studies at the University of Chicago this fall! Special thanks to Dr. Jeffrey Russell for his guidance on this project!

Billy Holderby (M.M. 2016) began studying towards a Doctoral music degree at the University of North Texas (Denton, TX) in the fall.
