Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are portable electronic devices designed to administer an electric shock to the heart in the event of sudden cardiac arrest. These devices are crucial in restoring the heart's normal rhythm and increasing the chances of survival. AEDs are user-friendly and equipped with voice prompts and visual cues to guide even those without medical training through the rescue process.

In times of emergency, quick access to life-saving devices like AEDs can make a significant difference.

First Aid Kits on Campus

Ohio University departments may choose to provide and maintain workplace first aid kits. Since there are no specific university-level requirements currently established, departments are encouraged to follow recognized industry standards.

EHS strongly recommends selecting kits that meet the ANSI/ISEA Z308.1 Class A standard, which is designed to address common workplace injuries such as minor cuts, scrapes, burns, and sprains.

ANSI Class A First Aid Kit Contents

Departments are responsible for ensuring that first aid kits are:

Assigned to a designated individual/position for oversight
Clearly marked and readily accessible
Maintained in a clean and usable condition
Inspected regularly (recommended monthly) to verify supplies are stocked and within expiration dates

In the event of a serious or life-threatening injury, call 911 immediately.

All workplace injuries, regardless of severity, should be reported using the university’s Employee Incident Report.

Training Availability

The EHS Department can provide American Red Cross AED/CPR/First Aid certification classes (Adult and Pediatric) upon request. Participants receive a 2-year American Red Cross certification upon successful completion.

Departments are responsible for applicable certification fees ($40-$45 per person). To request a class or learn more, contact safety@ohio.edu.
