Eco-friendly future: Celebrating benefits of Athens’ plastic bag ban
With the new year came a new wave of sustainability in Athens. Residents and students can be spotted walking out of grocery stores and retail shops holding reusable tote bags or brown paper bags, but no single-use plastic bags are in sight.
The city of Athens officially implemented a single-use plastic bag ban Jan. 1. An ordinance to reduce single-use plastic was introduced by council member Alan Swank and passed unanimously May 1, 2023.

The Ohio University community came together once again this year to successfully compete in the GameDay Recycling Challenge.

This challenge is a part of Campus Race to Zero Waste, an organization that encourages colleges to reduce their waste through various competitions.

Green Games creates more sustainable athletic games
Ohio University Athletics has welcomed a new and creative way to create a more sustainable campus through Green Games.
Campus Recycling & Zero Waste, the Office of Sustainability, the Appalachia Ohio Zero Waste Initiative and the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service have partnered with OU Athletics to increase sustainability during athletic games with the Green Games initiative.
Office of Sustainability advocating for outdoor classrooms
Ohio University’s Office of Sustainability is hoping to implement several outdoor learning spaces over the next year.
Kyle Butler, an associate professor in the Ohio Program of Intensive English, is also the sustainable living hub coordinator within the Office of Sustainability. He said he wants the project to help students in higher education develop a connection with nature.
The Office of Sustainability is still in the early stages of developing the project, and the university is unsure how much of the budget the project will receive.
