History
Civil engineering’s long history at Ohio University began in the early 19th century with the great demand of the mining industry for qualified engineers. In 1904, Ohio University established of the Department of Civil Engineering and awarded the first B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1908.
Since then, the department has been renamed to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and we’ve grown to a department of 14 full-time faculty with research and industry experience in areas such as transportation, environmental protection and remediation, infrastructure and construction. Through our renowned research institutes, practical knowledge, and academic inquiry, we offer state-of-the-art facilities, laboratories, and hands-on research experience to our undergraduate and graduate students as we explore innovative ways to make an impact that lasts forever as civil and environmental engineers.
