The Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling specialization prepares graduates as rehabilitation counselors who facilitate the personal, vocational, and economic independence of individuals with disabilities. In addition to core counseling coursework, CLRC students are trained in diagnosis, and treatment planning, medical and psychosocial aspects of disability, and job placement. The CLRC program specialization at Ohio University is CACREP Accredited, Reaffirmation in Process, and is offered annually on the Athens campus.

The CRCC provides resources for students as well as the unique qualifications and impact of rehabilitation counselor. Program Outcomes

Graduates of the program are eligible for the national certification as Certified Rehabilitation Counselors (CRC). Graduates are employed as rehabilitation counselors in agencies, state vocational rehabilitation services, colleges and universities, hospitals, career services, and school-based settings. The job placement rate for graduates in was 100% within 12 months of degree completion. Additional information on accreditation, licensure, and certification for the Ohio University Counselor Education program is available on Accreditation, Licensure, and Certification webpage.

Program Objectives

  • Understand the effects of the onset, progression, and expected duration of disability on clients’ holistic functioning
  • To be aware of environmental, attitudinal, and individual barriers for people with disabilities
  • To identify the impact of disability on sexuality
  • To be familiar with the rehabilitation service delivery systems, including housing, independent living, case management, public benefits programs, educational programs, and public/proprietary vocational rehabilitation programs
  • Understand the clinical rehabilitation counseling services within the continuum of care, such as inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, and aftercare, integrated behavioral healthcare, and the rehabilitation counseling services networks
  • To identify a person's transferable skills, functional assessments, and work-related supports for achieving and maintaining meaningful employment for people with disabilities
  • To explain the role of family, social networks, and community in the provision of services for and treatment of people with disabilities
  • Be familiar with assistive technology to reduce or eliminate barriers and functional limitations
  • To develop intake interview, mental status evaluation, biopsychosocial history, mental health history, and psychological assessment skills for treatment planning and caseload management for people with disabilities
  • Develop strategies to advocate for people with disabilities related to accessibility, accommodations, and disability law adherence
  • Understand third-party reimbursement and other practice and management issues in clinical rehabilitation counseling

Curriculum

OHIO's master’s of counselor education specialization in clinical rehabilitation counseling consists of core counseling coursework in eight curricular areas. Graduates of the program are eligible for certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor after they pass the CRCC examination. Graduates ​be eligible to apply for professional positions in rehabilitation settings.
